First-Year College Football Coach Grades (from CBS Sports)
By Shehan Jeyarajah of CBS Sports
UAB - Trent Dilfer
Record: 4-8
Grade: D-
UAB is one of the best Group of Five teams in the country over the past five years, but Dilfer delivered the first losing season since 2013. Seven losses came by at least two touchdowns. The one positive data point was a three-touchdown win over South Florida, but UAB should be better than having one win over a bowl team.

Where's the lie. It was Dilfer's first and transitioning to college, BUT, he decided to keep his DC so this year is all on him in my opinion.

One of the best group of five teams based on what metric? Wins over crappy teams? There’s no regular season OOC result to hang our hat on.
It’s amazing to me how national writers overblow the success of the previous regime. Did they take us from literally nothing to a good program? Sure, but it definitely wasn’t one of the best G5 programs. It’s still way behind Boise, Memphis, Tulane, and the teams that left the AAC for the Big 12, just to name a few.
Considering all the changes and whatnot, I’d give Dilfer a C or so. I definitely saw some things I liked, but definitely have areas to improve.

I think its relative and all how you look at it.
Maybe the phrase "one of the better G5 programs" would be better?
Top 5 G5 team in the last 5 years? No.
Top 20-25 G5 team in the past 5 years - yes. That would make us one of the best G5 teams in the past 5 years. Won 2 conference championships, got demolished in one, 4 and inches away from another championship game.
We aren't a Boise St, UCF, App State, etc in the past 5 years, but at least were not a Southern Miss, MTSU, ULM, Akron, etc of the past 5 years.
With that being said, I agree with what you are saying.
We reached that top 20 G5 program in the Clark Era, but we should have been climbing to get into the Top 10 or 5 contention.

Can’t argue with the grade.. I’d say more D+ or C- given the talent and depth issues, but damn there were some BIZARRE coaching moves during the season… moves that would’ve had us losing even with more talent. Hopefully we learn from it…

I'll give Dilfer a complete pass for last season, even though there were some concerning trends. If there's no improvement this season then I think it's a huge problem.

It's funny: All these people who talk about how awesome we were before the coaching transition - I recall precisely zero of them writing articles about how awesome we were at the time. I mean, none of them were voting us into the AP Top 25.
I'm not going to say our staff did a great job, but I honestly believe a lot of these types of articles have some personal animus built into them. A lot of people don't like Dilfer and/or the way he got the job and/or that he got the job at all. And it isn't enough to give an honest assessment of how the staff came up short- they need to REALLY sh!t on him. What's the best way to do that? Portray him as having taken this vaunted powerhouse of college football and destroyed it, make it all relative with a false narrative. And don't let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Vegas had us at 4.5 wins. Multiple outlets had us projected at 4-6 wins.

I'm sure somebody, somewhere projected us to win 1 game, but that was the exception.
I'd give Dilfer a C- overall. Some things could have been better, but others could have been worse. Installing his offense in one offseason was pretty impressive, and I feel like completely overlooked. There is a ton we can improve on, and with a full year of being able to recruit and develop, I hope Dilfer and company have done so. I hope the staff took a deep dive into everything that went horribly wrong last season and really worked on patching those things up. If not, we will see a lot more of the same this season.
