Samford 75
W. Carolina 71

:1.4 2H

Been a good one but looks like Samford will survive.

Surprised Kansas was only -7 @ Oklahoma St. I immediately jumped on that, which is probably a bad omen for the Jayhawks.

Duquesne and Richmond tied late in Pittsburgh.

EDIT:; Richmond takes a late lead.

Mid-January seems awfully early to be talking about who's on the NCAAT bubble. It's not out of the question that the WCC could put as many as four teams in the tournament. There's a lot of basketball yet to be played.

Four teams? They look like a 1 bid league to me this year. It's possible that Gonzaga gets in as an at large based on their reputation but they have no Q1 wins.

...defense optional, indeed...

Samford is now 15-2 and 4-0 in Southern - only losses were first two games of the season, at Purdue (currently #1 in nation at least perhaps until tomorrow) and at VCU (fair-to-middlin')... so the Dawgs might well end up being the SoCon rep for the Dance... ...this is the fourth 100+burger they've had, as well as having two 99-point wins...

That's what can happen when you full court press for 40 minutes against a bad team that also doesn't mind running up and down with you. Believe it was a Samford school record number of points though which is darn impressive no matter what D1 opponent.

Samford play 12 guys regularly every game. Only one player played over 20 minutes against VMI.

dang - interesting stuff (I honestly haven't seen them play this season - need to tune in soon) - I'm a fan of the '40 minutes of heck' style, as of course Mike Anderson had UAB in the tourney a few seasons (and whupped Kentucky in the process) with that style - not the style most players with NBA aspirations are wanting to do, but if it gets you wins, not bad to have on your resume.

If Gonzaga is squarely last one in/first one out 2 months from now, it could be the most highly anticipated Selection Sunday in decades.

Michigan St could easily be in the same boat.

NET and KenPom love the Spartans. I think my question for this is: at what winning percentage mark should one qualify for an at-large bid? How many games over .500 is “good enough?”

Unlike Gonzaga, who pretty much has to win out if they want an at-large spot, Michigan State can probably continue to putz around enough and stay in the discussion. And by “putz” I mean do what seems to happen a lot in the Big Ten: win big games at home, lose on the road. And Michigan State isn’t alone…quite a few Big Ten and Big East schools sit in that “stew” area where it could go either way.

I think a team should have to at least go .500 in their league. If they can’t do that they don’t deserve to play for a national championship.

Worked out for you. Kansas usually doesn't play well at OK St. In fact KU's 90-66 win gives Self a winning record against them, finally. Maybe b/c it is his alma mater. Idk.

Agreed with one exception: if you win your conference tourney. If you do that, you still get the autobid, otherwise, you're outta here.

Right. I just meant for an at-large. I wouldn’t get rid of the tournament auto birth as it keeps teams invested in their season.

New Mexico followed up their win against San Diego St with another impressive home performance defeating Utah St last night 99-86. Back to back double digit wins over ranked top Mountain West schools. The Pit is a serious home advantage.

On the other end Boise State didn't help the hopes of a possible 6 bid MW with a home loss to UNLV (Who themselves have beaten New Mexico along with Boise). That defeat snapped the Broncos long home winning streak.

FSU has led all game and as much as 16 early in the 2nd half, Miami has been on a run and narrowed the lead to 2. Great game so far.
