My solution? If you take a redshirt? Get injured? Covid wipes out your entire season? Transfer b/c the coach hurt you feelings? You don't have to sit out a year, but you still only get 4 years from the first day that you enrolled in classes at a college. No exceptions other than dual credit classes that you take while still in high school and competing for your high school team don't start the timer on your college eligibility yet.

The above sounds draconian, yet it's actually pretty simple to implement, and even the biggest Brands/Programs wouldn't have a need to fight it. If anything, they lose the 5* studs in less than 4 years b/c they're going to the NFL after 3 years. All of a sudden, you can't have career college students, and any theoretical future college football/basketball union would struggle to ever gain traction. It's hard to threaten strikes when 1/4 of your members could lose eligibility (and their senior year in sport XYZ!) before the situation is resolved. And the money in college sports, while still significant, would play less of a role as you would have VERY few kids consider the NFL draft but pass on it to go make more money by instead transferring to Syracuse than they would as a rookie in the NFL next year. It could also indirectly limit some transfers as there would be more risk if you knew that you could never redshirt.

Alternatively, make ALL incoming freshmen redshirt for an entire 12 months. Every kid, every sport, then they get 4 years of eligibility. This is less effective in my mind, but it does give high school kids 12 months to prepare instead of just being tackling dummies.

RE: Kid signs with 4th college in 7th year, will be 26 next year
I didn't see it in the article, but I've read elsewhere (at least on message boards) that Casey Thompson is coming to OU as a preferred walk-on and will not be on scholarship. He is interested in breaking into the coaching profession, and the OU staff is allowing him to be a backup QB while also working with the coaches on coaching duties as his schedule fits. In the age of the portal, a quality backup is becoming a luxury.

He already has a bachelor's degree from Texas and a master's degree from Nebraska (or maybe FAU...I forgot which one off the top of my head). I don't think he's going to be paid a GA salary, but I presume he'll have a NIL deal of some sort.

The history of the Thompson family at OU is well documented. The father, Charles, was a wishbone QB in the 80's but was better known for dealing cocaine, appearing in his jumpsuit on the cover of Sports Illustrated, and serving time for possession and distribution of illegal substances. That was one of many scandals that led to the downfall of Barry Switzer. Charles paid his debt to society, got his life together, and became a high-profile youth league coach in the OKC area. He's had an on-again, off-again relationship with the OU program. Casey's older brother Kendal was a backup QB at OU before playing his final two years at Utah.

After he played at Texas and Nebraska, I halfway expected Casey to end up at Oklahoma State just to complete the rivals tour. I'm glad he's ending up at OU.

Regarding the original subject, I'll be glad to see those with the Covid year finish their eligibility. Still, I think the days of a player staying on a roster at one school for four or five years are almost over. The transfer portal and immediate transfer eligibility changed that for good.

The portal is filled with guys who are 24 and heading into their 6th year of eligibility. I can't wait for the Covid year stuff to be over.

Playing 7 years of CFB isn't a problem? Yikes. Oh, UCF, nevermind.

Hey, U Can't Finish. (But hey, why don't you put what school you root for or are an alum of so we can unnecessarily and needlessly riff on your school when it has nothing to do with the topic at hand?)

Seriously, though. If you have eligibility for 7 years, you're not "playing" for 7 years.

But, no, I don't see a problem with not punishing kids for a really weird 2020, having redshirts, and having medical redshirts. What exactly is the problem?

Exactly. Covid era extra years will soon be a thing of the past. 5th years due to redshirting have been a part of CFB for decades. If a kid has an extenuating circumstance that gives them a 6th year that's not new either (Jason White).

I expect that pretty soon, the entire notion of years of eligibility will be struck down.

What NIL and maybe coming pay-for-play is going to create, heck IMO has already created, is a class of football players who are good college players, but not pro material, such that they can make a lot more $$$ playing college ball than whatever job they could get out in the broader society. And they are going to challenge in court, and I would not be surprised if they win.

3 more seasons. Medical hardship to get a 7th year is pretty easy. 20,21,22,23,24,25,26.

When there is no eligibility requirement for college students, I start watching a lot more international rugby and sevens.

When your teammates start asking you to rent cars for them instead of buying beer it’s time to get on with your life.

I wonder if that would help schools like UNC be more competitive in football, or would it just make the Alabamas and Ohio States even stronger. Picture an O-line filled with 300 pounders with graduate degrees competing against talented 19 year olds.

Until we go to a draft of sorts, I always expect the latter.

The players proposed 5 years of eligibility ( no redshirts) but this was rejected by PTB.

Of course, no college would be obligated to keep them around without making academic progress.

A century ago, this was the story of Harry Byrd, future president of the University of Maryland and namesake of its football stadium, since removed. Byrd variously played at Maryland, Georgetown, George Washington and Western Maryland (now McDaniel College) before moving on to minor league baseball and then becoming Maryland's head coach in 1911. Other than Jim Tressel, he's the only football coach I am aware of who became a university president.
