I'm not an Alabama fan, but I will still watch them. Most of the viewing audience on Saturdays are not fans of the specific teams that are playing, but rather fans of college football.

I know way more people that are simply fans of their team vs a fan of CFB overall. That's just my anecdotal experience though.

That's why we need NFL fans and gamblers to pick a P team.

RE: Would you rather the HAVES split off and form their own league/CFP system or no?
I'd prefer a expanded playoff. Both the P4 and G5 need each other to succeed. The P4 need easier winnable games ooc and G5 need the payout of those games. The P4 usually have a easy win while the G5 cash in over a million dollars per pay day game. There's a reason why most football formulas for a schedule is 2 G5 schools plus a FCS if not 3 G5 schools ooc.
G5 can try to build schedules based around what they think may be stronger points in their future. Down years schedule 2 Payday games a season. Good years maybe a weak P4 program and 2 G5 schools. Hell FCS schools Also benefits by getting payday games from both P4 and G5 schools.

25% of teams in Division 3 (average conference attendance 20k-35k): MWC and American
25% of teams in Division 4 (average conference attendance below 20k): Sun Belt, MAC, C-USA

Be thankful that the Big Ten and SEC are allowing 3 of their playoff bids to go to Division 2 and 3-4 teams.

111 of the 133 FBS schools average < 50K

95 of the 133 FBS schools average < 40k

Attendance rankings mean nothing.

What? Why do we need NFL fans and gamblers to pick a P team when there are plenty of CFB fans that don't even have a P team?

People in favor of a split need to read this closely.

There are MILLIONS of people who are fans of G5/lower P4 schools who will NOT watch one second of NFL Lite football.

Trust me on this.

This is not going to end the way you think it will.

TV ratings and attendance say otherwise. Huge numbers of G5 fans are primarily LSU/Alabama, etc. fans.

There is a point where you cut too deep and do harm. But if CUSA, MAC and Sun Belt were demoted to FCS, it wouldn't hurt the P4 at all.

I’m hardly a G5 apologist, but the “gives everyone something to play for” argument is just a more hospitable way of saying, “You aren’t worthy for the *real* championship.”

If I’m running a G5 school or conference, I’m not interested in playing for “something”. Instead, I’m interested in playing for THE thing - the true national championship - even if the chances of winning it are infinitesimal from a practical perspective. That’s certainly the case in basketball with the NCAA Tournament and I’d look at it the same way for football.

Once again, the FCS title game got slotted to compete directly against the final NFL Sunday of the regular season. That’s how the lower level championships get treated. I want no part of that at all if I’m involved with the G5.

Lets be honest----if the top teams break away---be that the top 25 teams or the top 80----they arent going to ask the left behinds if its ok. While I would hope for selfish reasons that its a larger more top 80 or so breaking away---I suspect any break away would be led by a handful schools making huge money----so if it happens---I would think the chosen few would be a much smaller very exclusive group of schools----likely more similar in size to the NFL rather than any current division of college football. Thats how you maximize profits and player pay. Everyone included wins----everyone not included is playing in the new FCS league.

The deal is that the upper crust makes up the majority of the fans who watch college football, including casual fans and those who just watch because it's the school they or their relatives went to. A split off would certainly alienate a large subsection of fans but not enough of one to make a major discernable difference.

And for the record, I don't think Houston is part of the upper crust.

Do they only watch college football when their team is playing? I think if that was the way fans behaved, college football ratings would be much lower than they actually are.

RE: Would you rather the HAVES split off and form their own league/CFP system or no?
The P4s remain the P4s because we the consumer agree to play by their rules. They are in the power position, so they get to make the rules.

If G5 finds it unfair and inequitable, they must do the hard things to cause change. Stop agreeing to buy games. Stop agreeing to anything other than home/home series. That’s a starting point.

G5 would get quality home games to generate more money and fan support. If P4 is unwilling to do this, they will have to schedule each other all the time and cannibalize each other. Then within the P4 there will evolve their own version of the G teams.

In order of viewing preference…..
1. Liberty
2. Louisville
3. CUSA
4. Teams that interest me (Kentucky, Carolinas, Tennessee, Virginias teams)
5. AAC/SBC
6. ACC
7. A high profile game if I have nothing else to do and am bored

In case you haven't noticed, we already have professional college football, and it hasn't hurt ratings any that I can tell. Somebody is watching those P2 games, and I don't think it's just fans of the teams.

Somehow, I can't envision Saturdays in the fall becoming time for those millions of fans you talk about to get to those "honey-do" lists instead of watching college football. A lot of people say "I'll stop watching if.....", but most of them backslide on that vow pretty quickly when faced with the alternative.

Networks don't care who is watching, just as long as they are watching. Lose some purists? So what, they are replaceable.

I never said that they ONLY watch their team, just that in my experience most CFB fans I know are only really fans of their team. That is not the same as them only watching their team. They'd also watch games relevant to their team.

If anyone wants to move down and follow FCS football, they're welcome to do so.

Most of us don't follow that. A "Have Nots" division would be what FCS is now. I have no interest in that.

I think that the networks would want Boise St to be included in the group of g5s that makes the cut, they have the ability to put up some good ratings and they're a big draw in the PNW, but otherwise your list is solid.

I presume that Boise would be in the XX, so would Fresno St be a G5 likely added to the XX for even numbers?

As long as it is all of the p4 I would be good with it.
