A couple of blasts from the past!

But they were able to get a solid football coach in ex-NFL QB Jim Harbaugh. It's kind of crazy they have as little as they do in terms of their football program but they play in a conference that is all OVER the country and they host Yale this weekend.
<a href='http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/2005-09-14-harbaugh-san-diego-cover_x.htm' target='_blank'>http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nf...ego-cover_x.htm</a>
Interesting that you mention Harbaugh -- he's doing well at USD and he'd be an interesting candidate for Rice. He's put together a great coaching staff. He might want to stay here, though; he's obviously not in coaching for the money because non-scholarship I-AA doesn't pay squat.
As for the money games, getting a 2-1 deal only makes sense for Rice if the "name" team would sell a ton of tickets in Houston. I question whether FSU would. I suspect that the UCLA contract has a clause allowing UCLA to buy out the game at Rice and get out of playing it; that would make it just a two-money-game deal.
... and from the "Why Harbaugh" thread

He can put a staff together that is top notch, with tons of experience.
He can FUNDRAISE and bring top $$$ in! Both from Alumni and outside.
He can get new facilities and add more to the ones we have.
He will win the C-USA and take the Owls to bowl games, while building a winning tradition around Rice.
He has the experience of dealing with the academics and getting kids into school at San Diego, which is also private.
Without a question the best hire, the best fit, and the best attitude for Rice. We will win with Harbaugh, so if Bobby May wants to do the right thing for Rice ------ Harbaugh will be their this weekend for an interview!
I don't think Harbaugh has nearly enough coaching experience in 1-A football, or head coaching experience at any level of football, to justify the claims you are making here.
I'm not saying he couldn't work out, but to act like he can't miss really is not supported by what is really a very limited track record of any kind. I don't think he's got the coaching experience to step in and take over a C-USA program. He's a big name, but thats all he is.
Honestly, I think Turner Gill is the most logical hire if you're Rice. Lots of experience recruiting in Texas, assistant coaching experience at the highest level of college football. Inexpensive. There's also an assistant at Notre Dame, the OC, who is a young black guy that has coaching experience at LSU and Texas and was Mack Brown's recruiting coordinator for the Horns. To me, you want THAT guy... haven't heard is name thrown around at all around here, but to me, Rice would do well to at least interview him to see how much interest there is (He may want to just stay a few more years and learn from Weiss, win a national title, and take a job as a HC in the Big Ten or Pac Ten.)

Interesting.
Gill now is an athletics administrator at Arkansas. He was 72-84 in a head coaching career at Buffalo, Kansas and Liberty.
Michael Haywood was the other person mentioned. He was the head coach at Miami, Ohio, winning the MAC championship in 2010. He then was in line to become the head coach at Pitt but was fired after being arrested for domestic violence charges two weeks later. He later was the head coach at Texas Southern for three years.

Well, ain’t this a small world, cosmology speaking.
These here two soggy sums of britches here just been saved.
Guess that just leaves me as the only unaffiliated one of the bunch.
