Nobody learns about slavery in the second or third grade.

Not back then anyway.

I'm 53 and I did.

Folks in the south probably didn't with the whole War of Northern Aggression thing 100+ years later.

Funny story. My dad was transferred to work in Texas for a year. I was in second grade.

I made some friends and one day one of them said, "Let's play army." I said OK. They, knowing I was a 'Yankee' told me this was to be the 'War of Northern Aggression.' Even as a second grader, I knew exactly what they were talking about.

I went to the second and third grade in a suburb of Jacksonville FL and maybe location might have something to do with it. I don't recall learning much of anything beyond reading writing and rithmatic. I won't argue too vehemently since that was a long long time ago and I could easily be wrong, I just don't remember it that way. TBH I don't really remember when I did start learning about such things.

I do remember my third grade teacher telling us the earth rotated because of all the people walking on it, so I take most of my "education" at that stage with a grain of salt.

I went to a public school for 1st grade and got yanked and put into a catholic school in 2nd grade. We had history there and it was taught even at that age in the mid 1970's.

I guess it's hard to have religion class lessons for kids that are 7 years old on the Jews enslaved in Egypt and Babylon and all of the other lesser references to slavery in the Old Testament without actually addressing slavery here in the states.
