HI everyone, I was reading in the Blade about the three renovation being done and ready for spring 2024 and how nice the new facility is. Will Palmer Hall now be torn down?

Yes.There is supposed to be something going up in its place.

Yes.There is supposed to be something going up in its place.

Palmer's footprint will become an open soft and hardscaped quad. The multi-disciplinary research facility (pending A LOT of funding), would go to the south of that quad roughly where the entry point is to the existing parking lot.

How many years ago I complained about all the money being pumped to remodel the remodels of Palmer and being nay-sayed. A lot would have been saved with a little forward thinking.

I remember North Eng as barely more than a warehouse plus urban planning. Who was that.... Patrick something? REALLY impressive guy, I believe got sick and passed. Palmer's original "charm" it was an engineering building you couldn't enter in the front and get to next floor up without first dropping to the floor below. I think they fixed that on the first or second remodel. Not sure they ever fixed the moldy carpets.

Regardless all that, there will be at least a couple good lecture oppotunities on how to do this, without disturbing the underground infrastructure connecting the buildings. Should all be a spectacular edition. And I was just over to the medical college, reminded what a beauty that is. Not as big obviously but more architecturally significant (amateur opinion) than anything up at UMHospitals. I dream a day when UToledo expands their presence on that campus and makes that place hum with activity.

Most of these opportunities - past and present- are tied to specific state capital budget funding request by colleges (every two years), often-as likely as case with Palmer, immediate needs (improve classroom or lab spaces) are funded as may take many years before building replacement is an option and more funding is available. It hard to simply jump to taking down existing space without timing of new space to replace it, hence temporary upgrades are down to "buy time" until full replacement can be funded. Important thing is space is improved short term and then eventual better space is funded and built. Its not often best (or safe) to not improve spaces while waiting the years it can take to fund its full replacement. In the meantime its not a waste of money to invest in improvements that result in space still be used.
