Coaches Show Tonight
Not a lot of new information to provide from the Coaches Show but he did say that Xavier Thomas is
making a move in practice and might be ready to get into the rotation soon. Other comments from
tonight:

• TK feels good right now with his 9 man rotation. Was hesitant about Starting Tyler Cochran at the beginning of the season because he wanted some leadership coming off the bench but likes how the Starting 5 has meshed the past couple of games.

• Coach said the road victory over Oakland was a huge confidence builder after coming off 4 consecutive losses against quality competition. He said that confidence carried over to the UNI game on Saturday.

• Reim Moss was on the Show and said he likes to talk trash to his teammates during practice to get them prepared for what might happen during the course of a game. Said his personality is what gives him that edge that he brings to the court.

• In talking about the team’s grittiness and toughness, Moss specifically mentioned Javeon Simmons and called him his “Wingman!”

• Wednesday’s opponent Marshall is 8th in the country in pace of play and likes to get up and down the court. TK said, limiting "live ball" turnovers and getting back in defensive transition will be keys to victory.

Thank you for this. So they practice trash talk...That's funny. Nothing on Wight, and I hope to see Thomas.

One other thing TK mentioned on the show was when he was talking about players' +/- stat (net changes in the score when they are on the court). He said only one player on the team has a negative +/- currently. He declined to say who it is. I would guess it's Wight.

I see that in the stats/box scores but I don't understand it. I tried to study up one time and got lost. I don't know, but would be curious, how much "analytics" play a part in the game today, if that is even the right word. You don't need little signs to know someone got their butts kicked.

As I understand it the plus minus is basically the score while you’re on the court. If you play seven minutes and your team puts up fifteen and the opponent gets eight during those minutes your plus/minus is +7. I think.

In talking about +/-, TK also said that this metric is only important to measure in multiple game sequences because there are to many variables that can skew it in looking at individual games.

Just did some quick math by looking at the box scores - looks like Wight is -25 on the season, for an avg of -3.5 per game for him.

Good stuff, and thanks. As Basketball Jones pointed out about what Coach K said - too many variables. Couldn't agree more. Stats have their place, but so do game films. I wonder how much they study those. I sure would want to.

RE: Coaches Show Tonight
Yes, Wight is the only player with a - rating. Maddox is at 0. Wilson is only +1. But those are all misleading, because they include a blowout win over Detroit. If you take out Detroit, then everybody except Cochran, Brcic and Lewis (barely) is negative. Also, most everyone has at least 1 big negative game.

When a player gets in a game also can have a big effect on +/-, and who else is on the floor at the time - i.e. it isn't always the players fault or credit, as it can just happen that he's on the floor when other are playing really well, or not. It also matters if the player is playing against opponent's starters, or the end of their bench.

Cochran and Brcic are overall the best at +36 each. But, +/- per minute played is more meaningful, and Brcic did that in half the minutes played as Cochran.
