One FT and this probably is ours. 18 of 20 for the night. This is no time to go cold.

It’s really nice to be a good free throw shooting team!

How can you call timeout with no time remaining?

I’m not surprised. This team is good, and all of those games where they looked disjointed, I knew it would come together. Luckily it did this game. And going forward, there are few limits for the Cougars. Seriously.

They didn’t really play all that well tonight. Good enough, but this was certainly no night where every shot went in, calls all went their way, the other team completely fell apart etc.

They simply played decent, defended well, went to Cardet a little (but not a ton) more than usual, didnt foul way too much, got a TON of steals, and hit free throws. Simple basketball really.

Oh my! I should’ve popped in during the game. Was too anxious about how they were going to blow it to even want to pick up my phone… haha! What a freaking win!! Cardet Jr came up with a lot of huge buckets for the Cougars. He had a lot of costly turnovers too— but ultimately they pulled it out!

Having Ked Green back for this one really made the difference in my mind. He’s been out the past 2-3 games.

Like Todor mentioned, Chicago State didn’t really play overly great.. but played well enough to win. Historic win tonight for the Southside team.

He didn’t really get a lot of minutes, but when was playing things went well because he is such a good playmaker. He did get 3 fouls in a short span though. And that’s OK, sort of, but one under the basketball was totally unnecessary and silly.

Noble Crawford has really developed this season from how he looked early on. Some of that is getting the system more, but he’s a real asset all of a sudden, when I wasn’t sure if he really would be. And even though Cameron Jernigan fouled out and didn’t score all that much, I am really starting to like him too, the more I see him. He’s so quick and such a quick leaper. He is one that can really make some plays happen like that block from behind tonight. I never saw that coming and I thought he was beat.

The Loyola game was close, ended up a 9 point loss I think.

If they can beat DePaul they’ll be 2-1 versus Chicago teams and I’ll declare the Cougars city champions!

I forgot to ask, where was Jean-Charles? I didn’t even miss him because I was watching Jernigan I guess.

Also, edit to what I said above about Ked Green. He did get 21 minutes. I felt like it was less. Unfortunately I had to watch on a small screen. He had 4 assists, but did a lot that goes unmeasured too.

I wonder how much attention the local media gave the game.

After watching the highlights of the game, I don't see how we handled Northwestern's big guy. He is a horse!

Their coach really didn’t play him that much because he went small to try to match Chicago States size and speed. He did dominate in the paint on some possessions, especially toward the end of the first half. But some of that was more highlight reel stuff, and he wasn’t getting up and down the court that well.

And while he could get some good looks offense, he wasn’t much good on defense when Chicago State didn’t try to go inside much and was using smaller guys to try to double team Cardet. In a situation like that, they would end up having him rotate and guard much smaller, quicker players, further from the basketball, and then he’d really be out of his element and not as effective as a smaller guy like Martinelli.

Incidentally, watching DePaul and Northwestern is fun. Reminiscent of what conference play is like. A team we just played, playing a team we are about to play soon. It’s a nice coincidence of the scheduling.

RE: Chicago State at Northwestern
Kudos to the Valpo broadcast crew. They watched the Chicago/Northwestern game and spoke well, analytically, about it.

She said, “it didn’t feel flukey, it’s not like they got out to a huge lead and held on, but they played with Norhwestern from start to finish. They got down and they’d make a run. And they did it thru playing really good defense and containing Boo Buie (spelling?).”

I don’t watch Northwestern or the Big 10 as much as some people. Before that game, I only knew the name Boo, and didn’t realize how good he is. And in that game, he did seem like a team leader, but didn’t seem to be that dominant. If I was watching an opposing team’s broadcast I probably would have gotten a better sense of his talent because an opposing team would have focused on him more. A home team broadcast isn’t going to focus on a star player in the same way because they all know it already.
