Trey Moss with another 20 point effort, playing the entire 40 minutes. Gabe dorsey with 39 minutes of court time.
Charlie Williams (23) and Gabe Dorsey (17) with career highs and Charlie with 6 assists.
Excellent effort, especially shorthanded.

Hey! Those were my comments! I would add that I wish we made more free throws. Jay and Bobby thought Lowe's struggles might have been due to his bad ankle.

You, of course, meant Caleb Dorsey for the career high of 17. Don't feel bad, I have heard Jay mix them up on several occasions.

RE: Men’s BBL ODU
Early post-game thoughts now that I'm home. Tribe at home is fantastic. The way that Charlie passes from the high post gets Chase, Gabe, and Trey to cut with purpose and even against a good defensive team we were getting those buckets. I was glad to see ODU's shooting regress to the mean in the second half. We won that game by boxing out and rebounding the ball. When shots went up our guys were looking for someone to put a body on, not watching the ball. Excellent effort against an ODU team that played well.

Mea culpa. Sorry, Caleb.

RE: Men’s BBL ODU
Further thoughts... Moss and Lowe are playing very well at point guard. Tonight they executed the offense with precision despite having hands swiping all the time. Keeping turnovers low against ODU is not an easy task. It was really nice to see Caleb finding his shot. Gabe and Jenkins were seriously getting into smack talk back and forth, and I wonder if it contributed to Jenkins being off.

Fantastic win for the good guys. Jay said it at the top - we would need good 3 point shooting to pull the upset. And we got it. 48%!

Dane has a new (tough) job when the injured guys come back, which is to figure out how we keep up this level of productivity while mixing / matching more players. Depth is a great thing. But, you have to think that one reason we won last night is that the same guys were always on the floor together and figured out how to win together.

RE: Men’s BBL ODU
By the time that I got back home to Chesapeake last night, after having some of VDOT's finest turn my one hour 10 minute trip home into a 2 hour journey into the abyss, I was too tired to post. Now that I am over the adreniline rush from last night, particularly against the school that I so dearly love to beat, I wanted to post a couple of comments.

We had as many scholarship players in street clothes as we had dressed, but somehow this gang played as solid of a game as I have seen from a Tribe team in years. And, in case that anyone not at the game might be wondering, we did not catch ODU on an off night.

Mr J is right when he says that there is the "bad" Tribe team, and there is the "good" Tribe team, and that the "good" team can beat anyone left on our schedule. If God is willing and we get Case, Karasinski, Houpt, and Collier back for the conference season, we will go 9 deep without hardly any drop off in talent. This team, when healthly and when it is wearing its "good" shoes, is deeper, and has as much quality depth, as some of Tony's really good teams. We have a bunch of shooters, and we have guards that can get to the rim and finish and get to the rim and dish. This team seems to really like each other and it shows on the floor. And, the "good" team has a plan on offense and carries it out. Not many empty possessions this year.

This is a fun team to watch, and in many ways reminds me of a Shaver team. Dane and his staff have done a great job of putting this squad together, and if we can get healthy, we can surprise folks in the CAA this year.

Here's for getting healthy and having 20 more regular season games where the "good" Tribe team shows up. The "good" team is a blast to watch.

RE: Men’s BBL ODU
Great win last night and IMO good coaching by Dane. The players hustled and the majority of time executed the offense. ODU was not that good with a NET of 229 coming into our game and fan turnout was poor for an ODU game.

Williams should remain a starter over Collier (if he becomes available from his knee issue) and Lowe has earned the PG start with Moss being the other starting G and backup PG. Dorsey brothers are showing their potential. I would rotate Case for Moss and Houpt for Lowe when they become available. Also have Karaeinski rotate for C Dorsey.

Hicks has earning the right to a Scholarship which they should give him for the second semester if allowed.

Our current NET is 301 and our CAA schedule is set up to have 4 of first 5 games at home against Elon (255), Drexel (121), Stony (307), and Campbell (323) with an away game at Hampton (333) between them and then followed by game at NC A&T (357) at the end. Hope this team can build some momentum early in the year before we travel to Hofstra which currently leads the CAA with a 51 NET but shares an away loss at GW.

This team has the potential to win away at Pepperdine (248) and Navy (282) to build some confidence and then run the table early in the CAA similar to UNCW a couple years ago.

RE: Men’s BBL ODU
I agree with a lot of thoughts shared up thread. ODU played hard and had a good shooting night and we still came out on top. Great win!

Our defensive rotations... temporary double of ball handler coming off ball screens, weak side rotated to cover screener until big could recover. It was good coaching and well executed by the players all night.

Another kudos to Dane for (finally) running half-court sets designed specifically to free Gabe for open looks instead of relying on him to free himself. I noticed it a few games back, but it was really on display last night. Even when it didn’t free Gabe up it made ODU work hard on defense and focus on defending Gabe, which created shots for others.

Loewe was an absolute beast on the offensive boards and the whole team got on the boards to prevent ODU from getting much in the way of second chance points.

I didn’t see UR game, but this was hopefully a break-out game for Caleb. His body language much of the season has reflected a measure of frustration with his role and flagging confidence. Was nice to see him smiling and playing with some swagger. Hope that continues...

I agree with other posters that starting 5 from last night played well together. The offense had an identity and we never looked lost. Starting 5 should be Loewe, Moss, Dorsey, Dorsey, and Williams for as long as they keep playing like they did last night. Caleb and Jack are neck and neck, so go with the hot hand in any given game.

Williams' play on offense from the top of key has been the keystone of the offensive awakening. Collier had an entire off-season to develop a competent mid-range jumper and did not. Any defender will quickly learn to sag off Collier and wait for him to drive. Collier should see the floor in spells, but gotta go with Williams as the starter rest of the way IMO.

I think Houpt will see limited minutes, though still in the rotation, when he returns too, especially if Caleb and Trey continue to shoot well from 3. Loewe and Moss have both proven they can run the point and are better defenders.

1 - Loewe, Moss, Houpt
2 - Moss, G. Dorsey, Case
3 - G. Dorsey, Case
4 - C. Dorsey, Karasinski
5 - Williams, Collier (Hamilton in case of foul trouble)

So, still a 9-man rotation, but with Loewe, Moss, G Dorsey, and Williams getting starter minutes. No problem with Hicks getting on the floor as needed too.

I think you meant LOWE.

FWIW, Collier spent the offseason in a full leg brace rehabbing his knee. I don't think there was a lot of room for working on a mid-range jumper.

Thanks, I don’t want to be unfair to Collier, but you could also argue that stationary catch and shoot work is probably one of the first things Collier would have been cleared to do during his rehab, so perhaps that’s the one area he could of improved on despite the rehab?

Yikes, thanks! I’d take Luke for another year any day.

Since I brought up Luke accidentally, I will say that LOWE has had the biggest YOY improvement that I’ve seen since LOEWE.

RE: Men’s BBL ODU
That was one of the grittiest, gutsiest Tribe team performances I've seen in years. It was a pleasure to watch, and I was really glad to have been there. Hopefully we'll find a way to get that magic to work when they're away from Kaplan, but it's good to know there's a really good team out there, especially when faced with adversity.

And MAJOR PROPS to Miles Hicks...he was noticeably undersized when playing defense, but his quickness made up for it. Deflecting the pass that led to a steal, then hitting that corner 3 late in the second half...ONIONS!

Finally, as a resident of the 757 and with several ODU grads in my local extended family, there's not much I enjoy more - sports-wise - than a victory over The Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary, especially during the holidays.

RE: Men’s BBL ODU
It is always great to win against ODU anytime, anywhere. The next big step for the team, other than a return to physical health, is to win a road game. ANY road game against any opponent. The Tribe is 3-38 away from Kaplan arena in the last 3 seasons. That likely is the fewest road and neutral site wins of any team in the country. A total of 3 road wins this season would represent a major upgrade. So, the bar can be set low. Win one of the 2 remaining road games in 2023. Heck, I'd take even a close loss at this point on the road. If it wasn't too late, the Tribe should play at Regent.

But 2024 brings the CAA schedule in a very strange way for the Tribe with 4 of the first 5 conference games at home. Win the one road game at Hampton.

The next 5 weeks have only 3 road games. Go get some road victories, Tribe. Because following Jan 18 against Campbell at Kaplan, there are only 5 home games left in the season. These 5 weeks represent an opportunity to see something better than the performance of the last 3 years.
