New football Division proposed by NCAA
YIPES.... I guess they'll call it the "Money Division", or some crap.

NCAA proposing new college athletics subdivision rooted in direct athlete compensation
NCAA president Charlie Baker is planning to introduce this week a proposal to create a new subdivision within Division I that grants certain schools more autonomy around policy-making and permits them to compensate athletes in a new and profound way.

In a letter sent to Division I members, and obtained by Yahoo Sports, Baker outlines a groundbreaking and radical change to the NCAA Division I athletics model, describing it as a “new forward-looking framework.”

According to Baker’s proposal, schools that choose to be part of the new subdivision — they can opt in or out — are required to meet a strict minimum standard rooted in athlete investment.

4 years, many have speculated that "eventually" the 'Blue Bloods would combine their resources to merge together & B more of a minor NFL league system where they conduct their own rules, by laws, & championships

Many 'Blue Bloods R greedy & don't want to share the $$$$$ to help out all those 'lower tier conferences & schools

Many states hav already split classifications in the high school sector between large schools & smaller schools where a school w/ 2-3 thousand high school students doesn't compete for a state championship w/ a school w/, say 1000 high school students (I.E> a 6A league for bigger schools & a 6AI for those smaller schools) Of course, for most states, state championship classification is based primarily on school/attendance size

But the 'Blue Bloods have much greater TV ratings, Alumni support, & $$$$$
then all those 2nd tier G5 programs. They want to keep more of the $$$$$ & PR for themselves

Thus, eventually,
the AAC, WAC, MWC, MAC, SunBelt, Conf USA, etc schools will "split" competing w/ the 'Blue Bloods for their (Football only??) championship & to make up revenue difference, they'll probably have their own "lower" level playoff/championship much like NCAA D2 & D 3 schools

IMO, it's actually worse than that. If those teams (and conferences) go through with this, then first we'll see a total realignment of conferences and teams. I don't think that many of the teams in the B1G and SEC will be capable of meeting the "ante-up requirements of $30,000 per athlete, so they will have to drop out (Rutgers? Vandy? etc.). Second, I think that some of the other "marginal schools", Illinois, Indiana, etc. may have to drop some sports to reduce their "total number of athletes".

and Also... The money for these athletes is for men and women, meaning for football and for ALL OTHER SPORTS. We talk about possibly having a separate football playoff for the Money League, but what about the other sports?

Do those Money League teams get to continue to participate in the NCAA basketball tournament? (hopefully not - best teams money can buy), or the College World Series (unlimited baseball scholarships), or the Women's Softball World Series? or any other sports championship?)

This is going to be ugly and devastating on multiple levels.

I think most programs can afford this. It's only like $7M a year.

This is only the starting bid. It will increase over time until the ideal number of schools is reached.

you can't make drastic changes because it will throw off too many alarms so you have to take small chunks out and over time you get to the end goal. this is the way.

Correct, this is the Ante, the minimum, the pot is unlimited. Plus it brings the NIL inhouse and allows the schools to control the money and the deals.

"most programs" lose money every year and depend on their Universities to make up the difference. The last report that I could find, only 18 Athletic Departments had revenues that exceeded expenses.

I fully expect to not be a UC UCATS Donor in 5 years. I have no interest in supporting minor league football. NIL will kill the sport, at least for me,

My sentiments exactly. I may still make "facility" donations, or donate the the scholarship fund, and likely seat "donations" when I attend games, but I'll quit watching completely before I start paying these kids a salary for the honor to be a student.

I'm holding out hope for the Olympic sports, but like you, I'll walk away before I fund a simi-pro team.

'How will we pay for this?' — College leaders react to NCAA's new subdivision proposal
Quote:The most important questions for fans: Who’s in The Club? Membership in the new division is murky. How many can afford it? That number is probably 30-50 universities, industry experts contend. How many will afford it? Maybe that number is higher, as programs scratch to avoid being left out.

Twice during his speaking engagement Wednesday, Baker mentioned 100 universities. FBS is at 133. The Power Four is at 69.

“Most of the schools in the autonomy conferences will feel that’s something they want to do,” Livingstone said.
