Bowl win history and discussion
Marshall 13-6
Southern Miss 11-15
Louisiana 8-4
App State 6-1
Troy 6-3
Georgia Southern 3-2
Georgia State 3-2
stAte 4-6
ODU 1-1
Coastal Carolina 1-2
South Alabama 0-3
ULM 0-1
Texas State 0-0
JMU 0-0

Marshall are the current kings of bowl season, with 13 victories. 3 Sun Belt programs have the chance to notch their first win, what were some of the most memorable bowl experiences on this list that you can remember?

RE: Bowl win history and discussion
I think ODU fans are pleased with RR so far. In his first 3 seasons he's reached a bowl 2 of those 3. Our previous coach had 6 years and got to 1 bowl. * Could have been 2 if we were eligible our first transition year where we went 8-4.

But I think that's probably the goal, at least make a bowl 2 or 3 out of every 4 years. Hopefully it's more often 3 of 4 with all the momentum the conference has right now. I would imagine all of our recruiting should become a bit easier, especially if we all perform well in our bowl games this year.

Agree with you, I definitely think your program is on the rise and I can easily see building on a bowl win going into next year in a winning 2024 season.

I am really surprised to know that Bobcats never made it to a bowl. I know y'all were playing FB much longer than we were but what the hell happened? Lack of bowl contracts or is it just performance?

TXST has literally only had 1 more season than ODU has to go to a bowl. Don’t act like 2 games is really that much more than 0.

For the record TXST was 13-11 in its 1st 2 full FBS seasons when they were allowed to go to a bowl. In ODU’s 1st 2 FBS years it was 11-13

I wouldn't take that as a slight. I genuinely thought Texas State had been FBS for way longer myself before joining CUSA or Sunbelt. When you grow up in ACC country and didn't have football until 2008, Texas school might as well be on the moon. The first time I looked up Texas State was because JMUs old coach went there and how he was moving up to FBS and all.

WTF did you wake up on a train track? My question was genuine and not a put down or a rhetorical one intended as a slight towards TX St. We literally played 3 years of FB before the transition to FBS so yeah congrats on a better transition record. For the record you will not find a single ODU fan dedending only two bowl appearances in a decade so yeah no I am not proud of our performance but just surprised to know that it's your first. Calm down Mary.

Texas State was eligible for a bowl in 2013 as were 7 of 8 Sun Belt teams. But the Sun Belt only had two tie-ins that year and only 2 went bowling.

Texas State was eligible for a bowl in 2014. We added a tie-in for the new Camellia Bowl and that spot came down to Texas State vs South Alabama. Texas State was 7-5; USA was 6-6 but all of our wins were FBS wins and we won the head to head over the Bobcats. USA went bowling and the Bobcats did not.

Weird. I thought ODU had a football team during the Great Depression.

That’s fair nobody in central Texas would have heard of ODU either of not for the name coming across our 2011 March Madness bracket.

Well, we have been to 25% more bowls than Marshall, so the Herd is kings of bet win %. But Southern Miss has bowled 26 times. That's a lot more holiday trips. Unfortunately I am saving money by not having a bowl to spend money on this year.

Dang they got shafted twice which explains the lack of bowl apperances. Didn't know that but it's more on the conference than performance i bet that stung bad for a school with long fb history and tradition. Will be rooting for the entire SBC in the bowls and little extra hard for Bobcats for their first win. 04-cheers. Thanks for pointing that.

Well we were originally formed as a division of William and Mary and had a team from 1930 to 1940. ODU offficially came into existence in 1962 as an independent 4 year college so yeah we didn't play a single game of FB until 2009. Basketball is a different story with our women dominating and Men doing pretty good until we hired a nincompoop SOB as an AD and here we are in 2023.

Yeah but you know some of those early bowls were kind of weird matchups. Pacific, West Texas State, East Texas State and McnNese State.

But also some good ones. Looks like the good matchups started at around 1981.

Southern Miss have played Missouri, NC State, Pitt, TCU, Oklahoma State, Cincinnati, Louisville, Washington and Florida State. 2-7 against those teams.

Marshall has played Ole Miss, Louisville 2x, BYU, Cincinnati 2x, Maryland and UCF. 5-3 against those teams.

We were 7-5 so...............6 of our wins were also FBS. Had the same conference record making the "tie breaker" head to head.

Your leaving the University of Havana off that list disappoints me greatly.

Yeah, lol. Another cool thing about showing this list is it gets to help teach the other Sun Belt schools about the history of Marshall and Southern Miss.

I feel the teams in our conference now will appreciate our history a lot more than the CUSA 3.0 schools did

Obviously, the 2001 GMAC bowl against ECU was the best bowl we've had. Went from a blowout loss to a barnburner to a 2OT win for us, which included a missed extra point that would have secured the win before OT. Losing 38-8 at halftime to 64-61, ftw. Probably the greatest game to watch that we were ever involved in for all time (except maybe Xavier in '71).

At one time it was the highest scoring bowl game of all time and the largest comeback deficit of all time, but I think both have been broken, since.

The look on Steve Logan's face when we came back was priceless and many ECU fans will not acknowledge that game to this day. Never happened.
