Seems like an odd choice but he probably wants to be more involved in coaching games over recruiting?

Or maybe he just wanted to be closer to home. UTRVG is only a couple of hours from his hometown, Zapata.

RE: Assistant coaching changes at Rice
Recruiting is arguably the most important aspect, but If I'm the AD I make any extension for Bloomgren contingent on keeping the OC and DC. Wonder if favoring those two meant gifting away Regalado.
Don't trust the HC so much without the OC+DC. There were a couple of bad halves, but we can win with the defense playing like it did this season and it has plenty of talent coming back. Big fan of Brian Smith, seeing Bloomgren quote "as Coach Smith says..." prior to the final game makes me wonder about him in a HC role. On offense, the OC adapted and improved each game with the backup QB who also progressed. He's a nationally known name with NFL experience, been a great fit for us, probably saved Bloomgren's job, could also be a future HC. Keeping them may not be easy, but with bowl eligibility reached by winning the final 2 without Daniels, it gives us an opportunity to be aggressive in working on an extension deal for Bloomgren right away, that focuses on securing the top assistants.

RE: Assistant coaching changes at Rice
WRC is Forgotten has posted somewhere that Rice needs to get rid of Alamar and Sanders Davis. I don't know enough to have an opinion on either, but assuming that Rice did, some changes to the staff that might be made:
1) Make Jon Kay AHC/Special Teams Coordinator/Recruiting Coordinator
2) Hire Bill Blankenship to coach O-line and recruit Oklahoma and Arkansas
3) For linebackers, a couple of possiblities would be Vic Koenning (Les's cousin), currently at UL-Monroe where Terry Bowden was just fired, or Dusitn Landry (at SE LA), and have them recruit Louisiana
Obviously, keep both OC and DC.
This, of course, assumes Bloomgren is retained, which now seems likely.

Yes John Kay as recruiting coordinator would be a plus with his Texas High School ties and respect among Texas High School coaches.
