I think by keeping him around as long as Indiana did, it set their program even further back and will make the job less attractive to a potential rising star in college coaching. It's a great object lesson for UC.

I wonder if Tom Allen is in his basement stabbing a bearcat doll and smearing lipstick all over his face.
He had it all. Coming off a bowl game. Sold out stadium.
Then UC came to town and blew it all up. They were never the same again.

i don't how much Tom Allen's tenure matters to the attractiveness of the gig. They are in a good recruiting state/region and b10/p5 money. They'll go single conference next season, so the osu/michigan issue doesn't go away but it becomes everyone else's problem as much as it is theirs. i also don't know what their facilities situation is.
it's honestly been something of a mystery as to why they've failed so badly at getting the right person in place.

Early favorites for Indiana IMO are Jason Candle or Sherrone Moore.

No one is going to willingly take the job that will, at best, finish 4th in their own division every year.

Reasonable ppl can disagree. i see that as a job that, with the right hire, can routinely be 3rd, and every 4 or so years compete for conference championships. osu, michigan, and psu used to routinely lose talent to the draft. That's been accelerated due to the transfer portal. Sure, the talent they are bringing in is high caliber but it comes down to the question about whether a 3rd/4th year player is better than a 4-5 star frosh or second year player?
Now that they are going division-less, you can probably make your statement about 3/4ths of the b10.

Oh, for sure...every former Big Ten West team outside of Wisconsin, Iowa, and Nebraska essentially became 4th Tier Coaching gigs.

B10 was baaaad this year outside the Big 3 (and really how good is Penn State?). I watched Purdue, Indiana, Minnesota, Illinois and the eye test told me I was watching directional Michigan or Ball State.

RE: 2023 Coaching Carousel
To be honest, probably the only hope for a lower tier BIG school to become relevant is to hire someone famous with a big personality (Jon Gruden, Deion Sanders, etc.). Might be impossible to get them, and might not work anyway, but "Help me Obi-won Kenobi, you are my only hope".

Kingsbury is the catnip hire for their fanbase...but man, that could be a disaster.
