Like Their OL, A-State's DL is Playing Winning Football, in 2023
Like their offensive line, their defensive front four was another area Butch Jones targeted for improvement this year. Many pointed to them as a big reason A-State faltered late in so many of the games they had the lead going into the forth quarter last season.

Butch & Company added a couple of transfers from the Portal , DT's Nate Martey 6-1 288 Jr, and Micah Bland 6-1 318 rSr., and several highly touted freshman that most expected would figure into their rotation this year.

Started out a little slow and then they lost starting DE Ethan Hassler 6-2, 248 Jr, starting DT Micah Bland 6-1 318 rSr (who are now available but have not played that much since being cleared to play) and off/on starting DT Terion Sugick 6-1, 292, rSo (out for the year) .

You would have expected things would have gone downhill, but they have not. The last half of the season they have gone basically with a two deep of:

DE 92 Thurman Geathers 6-2 215 rSr. 17 Blayne Toll 6-6 266 Jr.
DT. 45 Nate Martey 6-1 288 Jr. #96 Kadan Lewis 6-2, 248 rFr.
DT 90 Tim Hardiman 5-11 273 rSo. 91 Ashtin Rustemeyer 6-1 300 rFr.
DE 25 Keyron Crawford 6-4 243 So. 18 Dennard Flowers 6-2 248 rSo.

and this group has been playing winning football, and getting better and better every game.

While their true freshmen did not have to play this year, observers still feel they are probably the best group of young players in their programs history.

Like their young OL, there is no reason not to expect significant improvement next year and because trench play is the key to winning in the SBC according to Butch Jones, the play of their young talent in the trenches on both sides of the ball bodes well for A-State football going forward.

While they have another tough game against a talented Marshall team, win or lose A-State fans now know this young team will play tough, hard, physical football, start to finish.

While they have let their effort get ahead of the execution at times, costing them a win against Coastal, maybe South Alabama, and why they have three players setting out the first half this Saturday for targeting in the Texas State game, their execution has been catching up with their effort as the season progressed, and why they are a good football team right now, trending toward being a real good football team next year

Butch Jones has made it clear that he thinks this young team is "special", and hopefully their fans will agree as they watch them mature over the next few seasons.

Now back to reading more and posting less.
