Cam Rising coming back in 2024 for his 7th season in college football!

"...Rising took redshirt years in both 2018 at Texas and 2019 at Utah, and was limited by injury to only game in 2020 before becoming the Utes' starter the following season...."

Since he redshirted in 2 years and 2020 is not counted, he's got one more year.
He's going to be older than Stetson Bennet!

In similar news, Iowa QB Spencer Petras is entering the transfer portal

Petras redshirted the 2018 season, and started most of Iowa's games from 2020-2022. Petras suffered what seemed like a career ending injury against Neb in the last regular season game of 2022 against Nebraska and Petras sat out all of 2023 as a coach's assistant.

Good news for Utah. Another season of college football should improve his NFL draft status. He has 24 career starts and he could use another 12 starts. The NFL like quarterbacks with a lot of starts. He needs to show the scouts that he has fully recovered from his ACL/MCL knee injury.

And in another twist, he signed to play in the Big 12 with Texas, only to soon return with Utah after Texas leaves.

Too bad he will be 35 by the time he stops playing CFB. Just more transfer nonsense for never ending college athletes.

normal redshirt
medical redshirt
covid
4 years of actually playing

Yeah, it's weird, but it's not THAT weird. We're getting towards the end of the neverending college players who got that extra Covid year. The current system certainly is quite lax when it comes to allowing kids to stick around way too long though. If it were up to me, you could only get any redshirt if you never played a down in a season, with possibility to appeal for a medical redshirt if you suffered a season-ending injury in the first game or 2 perhaps.

You are right, it is not THAT weird. Rising did not play in his first two seasons of college football. He was a freshman redshirt at Texas in 2018, he had to sit out 2019 under the transfer rules in place in 2019. In the Covid year of 2020, Utah played just five games that season, and he got hurt in the first game. He had a shoulder injury and he ended up throwing six passes for the entire 2020 season. He became the starter in the 4th game of the 2021 season and led them to the conference championship that season and the next season. He is a medical redshirt this season and because of the Covid super senior season available to him, he has one more year at the age of 25.

The Covid super senior season has helped Bo Nix, Michael Penix Jr., and Jayden Daniels play this season and all three are having great seasons. All three are Heisman trophy candidates. The NIL money makes it an easy decision to stick around for another season and the NFL gets another season of film on these guys, which should help their draft stock. That is why Rising sticking around for another season makes sense for him and is great for Utah.

That's a very good point. It's not like Rising and the others are sticking around just to stick around, they want to play on Sundays and they needed another year to prove/improve themselves. Once the Covid kids are done with their extra year, things will somewhat go back to normal, assuming something else weird and unexpected doesn't crop up ofc.
