A few that come to mind:
Ga. State = Rutgers (Marketz)
App = Penn State (passionate, large fan base, in the mountains)
Coastal Carolina = UCLA (Beach, baby! And adorable, though not intimidating, color scheme)
Marshall = Nebraska (DEEPLY loyal fans with proud history)
JMU = Washington (Color scheme, passionate fans, proud past and and present)
Ga. Southern = Iowa (Has won league titles, up and down performance wise)
ODU = Purdue (still known more for hoops history but put can score big upsets in FB)
Troy = Michigan (Championships span multiple decades in their league, lots and lots of wins)
USA = Michigan State (Solid program usually that gets overshadowed by in state rival)
Southern Miss = Wisconsin (Proud program winning for a long time but has been out of contention as of late)
Louisiana = Oregon (Multiple helmet styles, Best seasons have been recently)
ULM = Minnesota (Similar colors, national titles decades ago but usually in bottom half of the league)
Arkansas State = Maryland (Lots of success in the past but lost a lot of footing. Colors also match.)
TXST = Indiana (Beautiful stadium, bad performance on field, 2023 notwithstanding for the Bobcats)
No one gets to be Ohio State or USC. Illinois and Northwestern were the others I skipped.
Funny thing about Maryland is they twice had three year runs of winning the ACC.
It's not a bad comparison but suggests you are my age or older (57). Most anyone younger wouldn't remember Maryland being good, since they've not won a league title since 2001. They won 10 ACC titles 1951-2001.
AState six Sun Belt 2005-2016 and outside the 9 year run 2011-2019 have not been consistent at all which plays to historic Maryland.
AState had a 9 year bowl streak which was third longest in FBS behind Boise State and San Diego State. 9 is tied for 43rd longest in Division I history. The challenge of G5 is sustaining. We've missed three and back again.

2. BYU 17
3. BYU 12

11T. App State 7
11T. UCF 7 (streak is active if they reach six but they are now P5 so I say ends at 7)
11T Fresno State

You all are leaving out TX and OU in this little brother exercise...
I'd tag JMU as TX - everything schools with tons of hotties. Football is always in the mix / ready to break through
OU is tougher....the new look Bobcats and USA both remind me of them

Doesn't JMU typically suck in baseball? You have to at least be average in everything to be an everything school.

We're Auburn, can't get out of our own way with dumb coaching hires but have the pedigree and the history of success.

JMU was actually pretty decent at baseball historically. Then the wheels came off in 2012 and we racked up 8 losing seasons in a decade. Wheels are still off as far as I'm concerned.
It's easier for Texas to be an everything school, because their "everything" is smaller when it comes to team sports. No men's soccer (JMU is in the round of 16), no women's lacrosse (JMU 2018 national champions). no field hockey (JMU consistently strong program with a national championship).
They have women's beach volleyball, so I'll let them net that against field hockey.

I’m 41, but I remember well the 2001 ACC champ Terps and how competitive they were under Coach Friedgen. Also, it was before my time, but I know about the national championship in the 50s as well as the ACC titles.
It’s a relative comparison. Maryland’s success is much further in the past, while stAte won, what 6 titles in 7 years in the mid 2010s? But both have fallen off a bit in their newer league (B1G) or new look league (SBC).
None of these are perfect comparisons.
I did like doing a B1G comparison because it feels less like a little brother thing. They’re in a different region.

Ok, I'll bite (in fun) trying to stick to divisions
SBC East
App State: Georgia. Usually at the top of the division.
JMU: Tennessee. Paper champions.
Georgia State: Vanderbilt. Academics and market.
Marshall: South Carolina. Living on the past.
Georgia Southern: Florida. Past champions without the recent success.
Coastal Carolina: Missouri. Can win every now and then.
ODU: Kentucky. Solid but always just short.
SBC West
Troy: Alabama. Color match and culture match.
South Alabama: Auburn. In state rival and little bro.
Texas State: Texas A&M. Outlier just waiting for their day in the Sun.
LSU: Louisiana. Past champions, usually competitive.
stAte: Ole Miss: Recently resurgent.
Southern Miss: Mississippi State. Good for a competitive team on occasion.
ULM: Arkansas. Usually a little down, but a culture fit.
