Look at the matter as one game. Trying to label this as an SEC fallacy is rather silly.
Auburn was underprepared, outplayed, out-coached, and fundamentally unmotivated for the game. It was a physical and psychological defeat.
Hugh Freeze and his personnel have much work to do, going forward, to build positive consistency and pursue an overall performance level that is trending upwards. That includes vigorously addressing recruitment needs that had measurably faulted during some recent years. Recruitment alone doesn’t cut it. Instilling discipline, improving conditioning, player cognitive development, incorporating improved play-making, do the blocking and tackling much better, and game day preparation and adjustments, are all coaching duties.
Also part of the story is the under value of the quality of CUSA play. The conference quality is a lot better than perception.
That is a point worth noting. Some C-USA teams have competed well with bigger schools outside that group. There’s too much stereotyping.
I watched Jacksonville State play South Carolina at Williams-Brice stadium. Jacksonville State is a scrappy, well coached, productive team.
