The implosion on offense for the Pirates this year is cause for a lot of coaches on our staff to be wondering if they still have a job come post-game against Tulsa.

Speaking of Tulsa, how are you feeling about that one?

IMO, it's all about ECU's mental state....and if coaching rumors swell this week.

We got a shot, but have to keep our heads in it.

I like your odds in that one.

If ECU football had been like this 11 years ago they wouldn't have gotten an AAC invite.

They are basically a middling to bad CUSA program these days.

I’m sure that 1 Tulane fan will be back to tell us how stupid it would be to fire Houston.

True.

I think they have what it takes to return to their past levels of success. But wow, they are just horrible right now.

Anyway good game ECU - good luck next week.

In this game, ECU threw two interceptions straight to DBs in triple coverage. Fumbled in the backfield. And the punter dropped the ball ten yards behind the LOS for no reason. Yes Navy has a terrible quarterback, but ECU’s is worse. You must understand that Navy would have scored 7 points if ECU had a punter with the grip strength of an 8 year old. “Maybe there was a little of us good”

Navy threw the football double digit times. That’s not a vanilla navy offense. ECU has a damn good defense and Navy couldn’t move it against them. ECU’s problem is they have the worst division 1 offense the 21st century has seen.

But go ahead and get offended your 5-5 team can’t move the ball against poor old ECU.

I’m waiting for the day we kick out USF and add FIU. But hey congrats on the Sam Hartman bowl win for your real team.

We have thrown double digits like 9 games in a row. That is just our offense under the new OC. In any case, I was talking more about the run approach, we threw a lot of formations and shifts, but we were doing pretty vanilla on the actual play selections. That could have been approach, or what they thought ECU was giving us or maybe didn't trust our QB/blocking (or deeper analysis will suggest I missed some stuff) - IDK.

Actually, Navy has averaged 14.5 pass attempts per game.
Only three games of our ten had fewer pass attempts than this one. Those 3 were Notre Dame (because there was not much point in calling pass plays when their D-Line was living in the offensive backfield) and the wins against UNT and UAB in which we averaged 5.7 yards per rush.

Navy's rushing in this game was tied for the second most attempts per game this year. The ypc was only 3.5 but still better than three other games. The rushing yardage was the sixth best of our ten games.

Everyone knew that this was a game between two teams with stout defenses and struggling offenses. That's why the over/under was so low.

You don't need to take it from me or Vonz.

Quote:Coach Newberry in the post-game presser:

Hats off to East Carolina. We knew it was going to be a dogfight. Probably the best defense we've seen all year...We knew it was going to be arduous today and it was...Wasn't pretty but it was a win.

Navy mistakes? Yes, Coach Newberry called out the 4 penalties on first down to start off 1st and 15. Two fumbles, both lost. One was pulling the ball out late on an option - untouched and unforced.

Everything Vonz said makes perfect sense.

Yes the best defense Navy has seen all year that is correct. That is why Navy only scored ten points with 3 of them coming after receiving the ball on the ECU 20 when the ECU punter dropped the ball untouched. Not because they kept their offense vanilla in an effort to not score.

Huh?
What are you talking about?

It isn't "an effort to not score."
It is conservative playcalling to avoid giving up points to the defense or other costly mistakes in a game that was expected to be low-scoring.

That series between fumble recovery and FG is actually a good example of the "vanilla" point: basically three conservative runs, centering the ball up because the second score was critical and a FG accomplished that.
Prior to that fumble we were also winning the field position exchange...Ray Guy candidate punter in a defensive battle also contributes to conservative play calling.

None of which takes away from ECU playing well defensively. The stuff that worked in our offensive explosion last week (it's all relative isn't it) didn't work against ECU's better defense.

Whatever you tell yourself it it makes you feel better. Tulane has done what they need to do to win. They would have scored more if they needed to. They kneeled the ball inside ECU's 5 to end the game.

*If Pratt plays vs Ole Miss then we likely don't give up a strip sack for a TD from our less mobile QB2 and Pratt is like better for at least one more TD than QB2. That's a 14 point swing and we win. We are 11-0 at this point in the top 10. Its fun to play the what if game right.

Ill trade you a your win vs Tulane for a Tulane win vs Ole Miss; that seems fair in what if world right.

As far as ECU goes. I generallly agree If Kirkpatrick is not fired by EOB 11/27 then Houston should be fired by EOB 11/28.
