How about that! UNC Greensboro take down #14 Arkansas at Bud Walton Arena. The first win over a ranked school in program history.
Long Beach St pick up another P5 win this time against Michigan 94-86.

They better not drop more than 1 more game the rest of non-conference or they may not have the opportunities to big an at-large resume. They're already down to quality win opportunities because of BYU's departure. They've got a sneaky tough slate coming up with Davidson, Utah, and Boise. They could use 3 wins.
add Washington/Xavier loser to that mix as well.
Yah I have to add Arizona's likely win and the South Carolina/Depaul result as well.

WAC favorites Grand Canyon win a close battle with San Francisco at the Arizona tip-off in Glendale. They move on to the final to likely face South Carolina.
They are hosting San Diego St in early December.

BE caps a disastrous day by losing two in the night cap. Managed to lose a game to 4/5 other major conferences and the A10 as well. Nova scored a nice rebound win though against Maryland.

SMC’s shooting efficiency will be their undoing if they will die on the hill for their game plan “brand” of waiting out the shot clock and stiff defense.

I watched (on TV) Vanderbilt barely beat Greensboro earlier this week and was impressed with UNCG.
And then Greensboro beats ranked Arkansas in Fayetteville.
UNCG is legit.

Rough start for the Big East. Their Big 3 is really good but after that it’s been rough. Only an 18-12 record so far for the other 8 teams. And that’s with 3-0 Seton Hall who hasn’t played anyone yet.
A couple of those mid tier teams will likely emerge and be tournament teams but it’s looking like a three horse race in the Big East between Marquette UConn and Creighton. Georgetown and DePaul are both really bad.

It's still early and teams can improve. But I tend to agree with you. Nova and St. John's might not be as good as some folks had anticipated. Xavier, Seton Hall, Providence and Butler could be very average. We know about Georgetown and DePaul.
But, and as noted, the league could still land five members in the tourney. We shall see.

NIL is going to rearrange it all. For schools with deeper pockets and with so many evaluative agencies available which improving their capabilities, the national scope of recruiting has been set in place to majorly enhanced. It is already impacting football and is beginning to alter hoops. Add the portal to it and we essentially have free agency. Those jewels in the raw which once landed in smaller programs where they were polished and stayed, will now be gone by year 2 and the less funded programs are going to find it increasingly difficult to keep a star and even harder than that to keep team cohesion. The divisions in college sports may well come to be known as 2A and 3A farm teams.

Somehow UC Santa Barbara didn't get the memo. None of the key players who contributed to our two NCAA bids in three years left for bigger programs. Reigning Big West POY is back for his junior year. Everyone from our rotation last season either returned to SB or graduated. Maybe we're a unicorn.
If anything, we've benefited greatly from the transfer portal and perhaps NIL. Finding jewels in the raw via bigger programs. Three in the last four years. Our 2021 NCAAT team had two starters who started at their previous schools, DePaul and Oregon State. Go figure.
PS, and Yohan Traore looks like the real deal. Auburn might have let one get away.

Pearl uses the portal pretty well. Holladay is amazing and he's just learning the system and what his teammates can and can't do. They'll only get better.
But to your point, yes smaller schools will pick up some jewels because roster sizes are set and as with football it's your solid 2nd stringers who want moor floor time. In basketball you essentially have 3 positions to fill and at least 4 skill sets you need on the floor. Sometimes chemistry plays a part of all of that as well. Smaller programs usually have coaches who can develop skill sets in players. IMO, some of the better coaches are at smaller programs in all of the sports. They train the players. Big programs look for impact players and emphasize recruiting over development, and it shows and in ways Kentucky has illustrated too often under Calipari.
But in the end under this system the money will be the main factor. It didn't have to be, but that's where the courts are taking us.

Wow! #10 FAU goes down against Bryant at home 61-52. Best to get this bad loss out of the way early in the season.

Great win for Bryant and Phil Martelli Jr who is now the full head coach after Jared Grasso resigned. An early season blip for Florida Atlantic.
Very good weekend for the America East all around. Vermont, UMass-Lowell and now Bryant with solid wins.
