NIU soccer alum on the deuce
Tonight on ESPN2, former Huskie men's soccer standout Nick Markanich scored in the 36th minute of the first half to give the Charleston Battery a 1-0 lead in the USL Championship match. Twin brother Anthony was drafted by the Major Soccer League's (MSL) Colorado Rapids but is now playing for St. Louis City SC. Nick was taken in the MSL Draft by FC Cincinnati but has helped the Battery go from last to making the USL playoffs and reaching the title match. It was second strike in the post-season and gave him 10 for the year. Unfortunately for Charleston, Arizona's Phoenix Rising FC scored in the final five seconds of regulation to force overtime. Neither squad scored in 30 minutes of extra time, and Phoenix Rising came from behind to win the penalty shootout 3-2.

I live 5 min from the Charleston Battery stadium. Was there once, nice little set up with a beer garden and a few suites.
