Wood, makes good coaching decisions, that’s why President Hemphill gave him a well deserved pay raise. Ten years of mediocre must be okay. Now, if he could only find out JMU’s AD secrets, we would be drawing a good fan base.

We are screwed. Hemphill did nothing but praise Wood on the podcast.

Apathetic fanbase is more dangerous than complaining fanbase so for anyone that relates themselves to ODU they should be happy if they are hearing anything at all even if they are complaints. What comes after that is a terrible silence and no one who loves the school wants that. So for the folks saying "If you are bothered don't watch" they should start working in the AD and when they reach out to fans/alum for season tix sales and donations they should try saying "We will gladly take the money from you but please don't watch the game/s if you are bothered" and see what they hear back from the other side.

Look, I like Vesean and Pounds. But the fact that we are relying on 2 freshmen this much in the age of the portal is inexcusable.

If we are indeed the 3rd best team in the SBC, it says more about Sun Belt Basketball than it does about us.

Sadly I've seen much worse basketball from ODU in the past than yesterday. However (and just like every year) we can't shoot 3s or FTs. We should be good enough to beat the bad teams on our schedule. I'm not expecting much else.

The transfer rules demand that teams learn systems and gel quickly. That’s just not going to happen with a Jeff Jones coached team.

Very typical box score from this program under JJ. We usually make more shots than the opposition. Made 29 field goals to their 21 field goals. But get absolutely obliterated from the free throw line and the the three point line.

Lone bright spots were the talented freshman. Allette definitely looks the part of a stud point guard. Pounds has plenty of potential.

Looks like it. And he is the real deal from what I saw. Some freshman mistakes, but he is as advertised. Best freshman since Wade. Pounds looks really nice too.

Couple stats that jump out to me.
Points in The Paint, ODU-44, Ball St-18. For a small ball lineup that's strange, but very positive.
Free Throws Made. ODU-6, Ball St-21. For a team getting into the paint, you would think you are also getting to the line more.
3 Pointers Made. ODU-4, Ball St-10. If you're playing small ball, you have to create and make 3s.

Has any of JJ's teams ever made 3's when mattered or even to a good extent during the regulation? I don't follow BB like i do FB but even with a limited following i have never seen any of his players good at making 3's ever.

Ball State looked like a decent team yesterday, but far from a really good team. They looked like a mid to low level Mac team to me. I'd be surprised if they make a decent push for the Mac title, the NIT, or the NCAA tournament. The TV announcers of yesterday's game were surprised at how small of a lineup ODU put out on the floor. They did everything but laugh out loud on the air about it.

A college team that is playing a 6'-4" Guard at Center is highly unusual. That's about as "small ball" as "small ball" gets at the mid-major and above level in men's basketball.

Teams that play small ball - even with a taller presence in the lineup - frequently/typically press hard defensively to try and get turnovers in the back and mid court areas for easy run out baskets. ODU doesn't do that, although they did show some token, very loose, man-to-man full court defense yesterday. It didn't amount to much as far as defensive pressure goes.

Teams that play small ball have to rely upon 3-point shooting and drives to the basket to score in the half court. ODU has shown they can drive to the basket but hasn't shown they can make a significant percentage of their 3-point shots. This is a consistent problem for Jeff's ODU teams, and I have doubts that this season will prove to be any different. Ball State took more than twice the number of 3-point shots that ODU took (31 vs 14).

Teams that play small ball are typically good at both going to the free throw line, and hitting their free throws as they draw fouls driving to the basket. If yesterday is any indication, ODU is coming up "short" on both of those important categories as well. Ball State took almost three times the number of free throws ODU took yesterday (30 vs 11).

If ODU is going to play small ball successfully then they need to improve on their 3-point percentages and quantity of 3-point shots taken, foul shooting percentages, and create more turnovers in the open court that they can exploit for easy baskets.

Good recap. JJ blew the game when we didn’t call timeout in the 5 sec violation. Seemed to even fess up to it if I’m reading his body language right as he talked to V Allette afterward.

He fessed up to it. When he took Allette out, he told him "that was on me and its my fault"

I was really not expecting us to be close in this game for some reason so I was pleasantly surprised by our performance. 1st road game for a lot of these guys. Going to take a while for this team to gel and for JJ to figure out rotations. Only big guy with experience suspended and I think Pounds and Leeroy stepped up to fill that void. I know most on these boards are not, but I am optimistic for this year.

No, correct if I am wrong, but Jones did go to the NCAA tournament and lost to Purdue in their 1st game.

The team has some talent. No way you can say Jenkins isn’t good. Some of the transfers look good. Vasean and Pounds looked great for freshman. Bryce has talent. Problem is they are all small and almost all guards who can’t shoot threes well. We can drive well, but once inside we”re in the middle of trees. If we had a decent inside game to compliment these guys we’d be pretty good. But… we don’t. I will say Leroy played better than I expected, and Pounds is going to be great at some point in his career.
