The past few games we've been talking about offense and defensive performance between the halves and it made me curious what the data show. This table shows the points scored & allowed in each quarter this season, and it also shows how this looks against other non-autonomy level teams.
I was surprised that the defense is consistent in points given up and almost exactly allows 50% of its total points in each half.

That makes sense to me. It's like our offensive play calling just goes completely haywire in the 2nd half, outside of when we had to play catch up after falling behind to FAU.
Like the drive after FAU scored their first offensive TD in the 2nd half - I'm pretty sure literally did nothing but run the ball. That is clearly not the offensive identity of this team. We do not have a good run game or a good offensive line. Why did we suddenly think we could turtle up and Bill Clark our way to a victory there?
And why do we run these asinine run plays over and over on 3rd and 4th downs? I've seen it at least 3 times between the Memphis and FAU games- Thats potentially 3 TDs we left on the field just from bad play calling.
What gives? Can we not make adjustments in game? Does the coaching staff freeze up when the opposing coaching staff inevitably makes adjustments?
It's a freaking STARK contrast between the 2 halves these last two games. It was bad before these 2 games, but has been abysmal against Memphis and FAU. The coaching staff has to learn quickly.
Something specifically about the FAU game that frustrated me was we started nearly every single drive with a negative play and had 2nd and 13-15 each drive. We got too cute with it and never adjusted. Seems like coaches are able to figure us out at half and we don’t have a second game plan in the moment. FAU we should have dropped 60 they weren’t doing anything special

Agreed. I said something similar in the game thread. We try to run way too many plays that take a long time to develop way behind the line of scrimmage aka get too cute, and we take a big loss a lot of the time. Of course, they do occasionally pop and we get a huge gain. But you can only run those type of plays so many times a game before you get exposed. UTSA was a prime example - they were clearly, clearly ready for that and blew those plays up almost every time.
Does the picture still not work? If not, sorry to get so antiquated with it but here it is as an attached pic.
Removing the games against NCAT & UGA, we're getting outscored in every quarter. Outscored overall by 116 points in those games, and largely in the second half.
