STF, just like Compher, lacks the connections or vision to see an opportunity and chooses the easy and simple way out. Nothing personal against Garcia, but this should have been like hiring a new coach for a program; look around, see who might be interested, think long-term rather than a short-term fix.

I disagree.

Radio is a legacy role and one that having someone there, like Baker or Garcia, is the ideal. Radio is local and having a local guy (and Garcia is about as local as it gets in regard to NIU media) is preferred.

Personally, I'd wish Garcia was staying on the TV broadcast because that's where I get the vast majority of my basketball content but I get the move to radio.

I am just happy that if I choose radio, I will now have an idea what is happening on the field. Baker may have been a homer but he was bad.

Baker was awesome and an NIU legend at this point. Glad though that Andy is the new #1, seems like a great guy and passionate about sports and the NIU brand.

GO HUSKIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I find it funny people always say this. Early in the season, when the weather is pretty nice, I'm out and about on Saturdays and if I'm in the car, the wife endulges me and we have the game on the radio and I always seem to know exactly what the score is, what is happening and everything.

So, color me confused as to anyone who doesn't.

Really? Is he too old? Need a young guy?

A veteran? Someone with lot of experience would come here, to broadcast to what, 350k to be heard by 15 k, if that? Do well here, stay?

I would really love to hear what a long term guy is . And you don’t think Garcia knows the program, the role and wants the job?

But then again , 1st line starts “ STF…”

Apparently the trick is you're never interrupted. Get called away for a few minutes or simply be unable to listen continuously and then come back for an update and you can wait and wait for a clear mention of the actual score.

I thought I was alone in this. I had to turn it to the emu broadcast to know what was happening. Baker has always driven me crazy.

At the end of the day---the only thing that really matters is the score. It was a probably six-seven years ago, but during a game I had to get something done. And this is no joke---I drove from DeKalb to Oak Brook and never knew what the score was. My wife didn't quite understand why I was yelling at the radio. Do you know how many times they went to a commercial break during that time without Bill telling the score? At least a few.

It has nothing to do with age because everyone starts somewhere. Garcia is a UCF grad who was hungry enough to take a chance same as anyone else who would "want the job". He didn't come with a knowledge of the program, but his post-game questions are too generic. Just like Baker, his efforts show no creativity or research beyond the basics. As mentioned in a different thread, the Ohio network's Russ Eisenstein demonstrates detailed research, a familiarity and knowledge of the MAC, and a fresh approach, plus connections that would have led him to be interested since OU and the Athens sticks are steps below our market. Once again, what would have been the harm in at least advertising an opening and seeing who might apply as opposed to taking the easy option. Fully realize that so many Huskie fans have grown accustomed to Baker, but when it comes to media around the MAC, he is not respected and considered by many to be a blow-hard. Don't worry, it is a done deal now and everyone wanting more of the same will not be disappointed. This is simply another example of NIU administration selling itself short and willing to settle rather than thinking out of the box.

Seriously doubt that ever happened. I've listened for many years and always knew what was going on. Have to pay attention.

Isn't this Ohio guy the one who got passed over for a bunch of jobs including SIU?
He's nothing special. Is he a family member?

They're radio announcers. They aren't curing cancer. Probably the attention should be on other things as long as Garcia is competent.

RE: Andy Garcia new “Voice of the Huskies”
Have been a fan sometimes it seems like forever, and yes, Baker's "reluctance" to announce the score bugged the hell out of me. So did his updates on where he had breakfast/lunch/dinner on the way to, or was going to on the way from (road games). So what?! JHTDC let the guy retire in peace, if nothing else. Maybe NIU's lucky somebody stuck with the Huskies that long.

Just like to know, tho, how this thread became a radio announcer bash-fest? Garcia hasn't even taken over yet. At least wait to b-m-c.

No, Eisenstein isn't a family member or even an acquaintance other than someone who has shared a press box just like Baker. The difference, as many MAC media members have experienced, is that Baker can be a belligerent blow-hard who thinks he is special because he's been around for a long time. While sportsfan doesn't think Eisenstein is anything special, ironically The Dog Pound has shared links to his pregame reports and applauded the detail, facts, and perspective put in. Yes, SIU chose someone else but that is the only job he pursued and didn't get. Shouldn't it tell you something that SIU and other places at least conduct a search? Apparently they value their radio network like an opening for a head coach, let's see who applies. Sorry sportsfan but you keep missing the point, Sean T and too much of NIU's administration put in the bare minimum effort in order to just move along. As stated before, it is now a done deal. What is disappointing is that no thought or effort was made. When there was a conflict between Huskie hoops and football making and Baker wasn't available, Mike Korcek reached out to Jeff Joniak to fill in. Joniak did all kinds of research including reaching out to some of us in the media who cover the Huskies. Joniak used that game tape to land the Bears job, so you tell me what's the potential value of doing a Huskie game? Rochelle's Jeff Leon is an NIU grad and is well known and liked but IHSA folks plus a ton of high school coaches; perhaps he might have thrown his hat into the ring. This is just another example of how STF and NIU ignore suggestions and show no initiative.
