They didn't ask until last week.
Unfortunately (for them), this was far too late in the planning to allow them any time to perform at half time.
As it's homecoming, with the parade of the giant checks, there may not have been any time for them anyway.

I am (SWC) old school, and think that every visiting band should have time to perform at half time as a simple courtesy to our guest.

Gawd.... the 'comin round the mountain' drone

What happens when they finally come around the mountain? Will they have to play another song? Can they play another song? LOL

I remember that the TT band used to live up to their "goin' band from Raiderland" label by coming every time TT played at Rice. They were probably my favorite SWC band. They could be loud and brassy like the Longhorn Band, but could also play softly--and well.

The MOB had planned for their arrival - all 400 of them - by having the Dickinson and LaPorte high school bands perform with us - for a total of 700.
This was during our denim uniform era, and we got the high school kids to just wear jeans and work shirts, and we left off the vests - we all looked alike.
We did a tunnel entrance, and it went on seemingly forever.
It was our "China Show".
The show went well enough, but the size comparison didn't, because in 1978 the "Goin Band" stayed home.

RE: Rice vs SMU - Homecoming
You know... I was talking to Thrill last night (IRL) and he said something that reminded me...

One of the great things about being a Rice Owl is that by definition, you have chosen the harder path. There is some 'value' in that I think. You could go to an easier school and breeze through and be in the top 10, but you chose to be measured against much tougher standards. Similarly, you didn't choose an Ivy, which means that you may have missed out on the greater cache' of that affiliation... to be or remain a Texan. Even those who 'back in' to Rice (as a fallback)

As JFK alluded to, I think there is a lot of honor in that.

And the MOB in particular... no support, no money, no time... really 'no reason'... does it... and some of them (particularly Grungy, but not only him) have done it for a VERY long time, with little to no reward other than knowing that they took the road less traveled... and the vastly tougher road.... which is what makes victories at Rice so special... especially WG's NC... and losses that should have been wins so difficult to swallow. We HAD it... we EARNED it... and yet we somehow let it slip away.

I say this to point out how important it is to support the MOB, at least as much as we support anything else dealing with athletics... which may not be what we all want, but is VASTLY more than we support the MOB.

The funny thing is, I alluded to this 40 years ago to the MOB... but I lacked even the understanding myself of 'why we did it'.... so I suspect it was lost on them as well... and I wish I could have said it better.

I WANT the MOB to remain 'quirky'.... but I want them to be more inclusive and not just an inside joke to the 50 or so of them and the few students who attend.... which sometimes makes them look bad to everyone else.... like nobody cares... like nobody is invested. We sometimes don't look like a student-lead band vs a University lead one... we instead look like Eddie Murphy's mom's 'House-burger'.

'student made' props are fine.... but let's give them some tools and maybe some teaching/support to make them as 'good' as they can be.

Rice vs SMU - Homecoming
My score prediction is so outrageous I might as well double down and post it here too.

With the aid of a lopsided edge in turnover differential and at least one other weird bounce…

Twinkies 70, My Little Pony 34.

From the conference board, I was giving smoo crap about playing cupcakes so they claimed they were now moving up to… Twinkies.

Have you ever been beaten by a Twinkie?

(I have, and I can tell you it is not pleasant)

Go Rice I don’t care if we win by 70 or 7 or 0.7. Just win baby!!

Any tips on buying tickets for cheap? My two kids were wanting to catch a ball game and bring their friends. Five tickets is $150 before fees both retail and secondary.

Was hoping for tips to score $10 tickets. In a related note, what time do the ticket takers stop taking tickets at the stadium?

After halftime, you guys may get in free. I was super late for a game two years ago, and walked right in.

Holding call negates an SMU TD.

And Owls force a punt, which is an unsuccesful fake. 1st down Rice at their own 44.
