Quote:On the menu today: Well, Representative Matt Gaetz (R., Newsmax) got his way yesterday, and now we all get to live with the consequences. The U.S. House of Representatives has no speaker. Kevin McCarthy was ousted and says he won’t attempt a comeback. There is no consensus among House Republicans about who should replace him. The House is adjourned, and there won’t be a vote on the next speaker until a week from today. And the clock is ticking: On November 17, the funding to keep the government operating runs out.

You know who’s feeling fantastic this morning? New York Democratic congressman Jamaal Bowman. There’s nothing like deposing the speaker to get people to forget you pulled the fire alarm in a House building and had to disavow your own staff’s talking points that called your critics Nazis.

I begin today with a difficult question: What is the point of today’s Republican Party?

No, really, what is the point of the Republican Party right now?

I didn’t think Kevin McCarthy was going to be ousted from his position of speaker of the House. I believed you couldn’t beat something with nothing. Well, right now, America has Speaker Nothing. Matt Gaetz cobbled together enough Republican votes with Democratic votes to get rid of McCarthy, but at least for now, no one knows who, if anyone, could garner enough votes to become the new speaker.

Instead of a speaker, the House of Representatives currently has a “speaker pro tempore,” Representative Patrick McHenry (R., N.C.). (“Pro tempore” means “for the time being.”) The presidential line of succession refers to the speaker, not the speaker pro tempore; so if, God forbid, something ever happened to President Biden and Vice President Harris, the next president would be Patty Murray, the Washington State Democratic senator who serves as the Senate’s president pro tempore.

There are currently two vacancies in the House of Representatives, meaning 217 members make a majority. A speaker must be elected by a majority of those present. Yesterday, 210 of the current 221 House Republicans — that’s 95 percent! — voted to keep McCarthy, with three Republicans and four Democrats not voting. All 208 Democrats present voted with eight Republicans to oust McCarthy.

Gaetz Want Power W/O Accountability

lol. The Republicans will pick another leader. Some of you guys are acting like Gaetz took out the next face to be carved into Mount Rushmore. The lesson here is don’t make deals to get elected if you have no intention of following through. He all but dared Gaetz to challenge his seat and it blew up in McCarthy’s face. Turns out it was McCarthy who had a deal with the Democrats——and they stabbed him in the back. In a few days a new Speaker will emerge and the legislative process will be back on track.

I find it sort of odd and quite hypocritical how many of the Dem congressmen are stumping about how much of a clown show this stunt has been. If they really thought that this was a joke, why did none of them vote for McCarthy... they are just as complicit in the clown show as the Evil 8 are.

ADDED: I am also fully aware of the like of Boebert and MGT grandstanding against McCarthy verbally, while simultaneously voting to keep him in the post.

Very true. The next time anyone from the left - - be it from the Democrat party, the owned media or just one of our local trolls - - speaks of "bipartisanship", they should have this episode thrown back into their smug faces. Rep. McCarthy, sucker that he is, presented what was actually a bipartisan proposal. He was called on it by the eight (just eight!) attention hounds in the Republican ranks. And when that happened every single Democrat - - literally every one of them - - dropped the false act of bipartisanship and dogpiled him.

Forget bipartisanship. It will never, ever again happen - - at least not in Congress.

--> Now, for the record (and for the benefit of those on this forum who are capable of seeing more that "Reeeee" when I post my drivel), I'm for most part glad that it happened. Matt Gaetz, despicable weasel that he is, is correct that our federal gov't is beyond repair. It needs a total overhaul and to have its "Supremacy Clause" powers limited to only a very few truly federal responsibilities - - foreign relations, military readiness, some minimal level of monetary-energy-env'tal oversight and actual interstate commerce being the only examples that immediately come to mind.

--> And, to take that one step further: I would be totally in favor of Donald Trump being elected as Speaker of the House. It is one of the few places where his moronic talent for disruptive chaos might actually do some good.

The Dems are correct - this stunt was a clown show because it illustrates how disorganized the GOP is vs the Dems. If all roles were reversed, you'd be ecstatic to see the GOP stabbing speaker Nancy in the back by voting to boot her ass while a small contingent of Dems got the ball rolling to take her out. Still find it "odd and hypocritical"? Of course not because if you see your enemy is about to step into a bear trap...you'd help him do it.

I think it's safe to say that no one here is a huge fan of McCarthy. However, if he was the one who could get the most votes then you have to follow it thru. While he did not follow the exact desires of the MAGA wing of the GOP, he surely did it better than any speaker from the Dem side.

Okay, now what does the GOP do? It was hard enough to get enough votes to override the Dems choice for speaker by supporting the most popular guy amongst the other candidates in McCarthy. If they can find someone more suitable - then I guess it works out. However, very thin majorities are hard to work with anyways so why waste all of this effort with minimal gain? The alternative is the GOP fvcks up and somehow the Dems get their speaker while the GOP has majority in the House. If that happens...Gaetz will look like the biggest buffoon in Washington. Or it will look like he was paid off by "someone" to sow chaos in the GOP.

Quote:The fallout from the ouster of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is still alive the day after the lower chamber voted to remove him from his position. Speculation as to who might replace him has been prominent on the airwaves and interwebs.

But what does America think?

The findings of a new poll might shed some light on people’s attitudes toward the historical moment. A new Economist/YouGov survey reveals conflicting attitudes on the fate of McCarthy, which was brought about by a collaboration between Rep. Matt Gaetz and House Democrats. The move has been hotly debated on the right, with people arguing for and against removing the former speaker.

The poll showed that about 46 percent of Americans approved of removing McCarthy as speaker, while 28 percent disapproved. Among Republicans, the margin narrowed a bit, with 44 percent supporting the move and 34 percent opposing it. This further illustrates the current divide in the GOP in terms of philosophy and strategy.

But wait, there’s more!

Also noteworthy is the poll’s finding that 47 percent of Americans believed McCarthy’s ouster was a power grab. This included 41 percent of Republicans. This seems to indicate that the effort to get rid of the former speaker was not motivated by principles but by a desire for more power.

It is also worth noting that McCarthy’s stint in the speaker’s chair was marked by fluctuating popularity. When he first took the position, about 59 percent of Republicans approved of him. Only about 21 percent did not.

However, as time went on, McCarthy’s approval numbers dropped slightly. At the time of his ousting, about 56 percent of Republicans still held a favorable view of the former speaker.

Amid this current saga, Congress still remains widely unpopular, with a dismal 14 percent approval rating.

This news comes at a tumultuous time in American politics – especially for the Republican Party, which finds itself at a pivotal moment. The moderate wing of the party, represented by McCarthy, could be facing a reckoning. Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Steve Scalise (R-LA), both of whom represent the more conservative faction of the party, have thrown their hats into the ring.

The conflict between pragmatism and principled conservatism has been raging for more than a decade at this point, and it seems clear the Republicans are ready for something new, which might explain why so many supported ousting McCarthy. However, as I wrote earlier, even if a principled conservative is elected to replace the former speaker, corruption is likely too ingrained in the federal government for any one person to make a difference.

Still, this occurrence will almost certainly have a strong influence on where the GOP goes next. Will it continue using a more conciliatory approach with Democrats and focus on bipartisanship? Or will it become more antagonistic toward the left – at least in terms of rhetoric? The selection of the next speaker will provide a strong clue as to the future direction of the party, which is at a crossroads. I suppose we will find out soon enough how this all shakes out.

Again----Ive never understood this hand wringing over McCarthy. He wasnt very good and he was never anyone outside of Washington's first choice. I dont think the Republicans should seek more bipartisanship or try to be more antagonistic toward the left. I think they should concentrate on getting spending under control, get the border under control, and start legislating solutions to the issues that American families care about. Im good with investigating what is going on with the Bidens. Im good with forcing Homeland Security to do thier jobs on the border. Im good with investigations that expose the political corruption that has led to a two tiered justice system in the DOJ. If that leads to impeachments----so be it.
McCarthy is the first Republican serious about the Bidens and FBI and DOJ. The Republicans in the Senate weren't.

No doubt. By his actions he was focusing on the DOJ and Biden WH with the hearings they were holding - something no prior GOP speaker from Boehner to the present would have done.

Seriously, follow the money wrt to Gaetz. He's no hero. Either someone bought him off or he's a flaming moron.

The two are not mutually exclusive. But I'm leaning towards the latter.

IF the GOP doesn't fvck up and allow the Dems to get the speakership due to infighting within the GOP...do you really think anything would be much different? Let's say the new speaker is from the GOP, he/she continues what McCarthy already started and even tries for more. Given the razor thin majority coupled with the WH being in the Dems hands already, there won't be any difference from McCarthy. Guess what happens next. First, the MAGA wing will go after the NEXT speaker because he/she isn't "conservative enough". Second, the perception of the GOP will be they are amateurs who have no business governing.

What we do know - given how little will change anyways - is that Gaetz has STUPIDLY shifted the spotlight onto himself instead of continuing to focus on the WH and how stupid their politics are. Fortunately, there is plenty of time for things to adjust.

IF the Dems somehow pull off a Hail Mary and actually gets their choice of speaker.... Then what?

which is why I favor looking outside the box at someone other than a sitting rep … I view this as an unparalleled opportunity … are the pubs savvy enough to figgle out that option??? #doubtful

and нет! … selecting DJT would be ridiculously tard…

if I had to guess, Jim Jordan is most likely the next speaker … I could live with that…

Either someone bought him off or he's a flaming moron.

do you guys really think McCarthy's replacement will let off the gas ... also, other than thingys becoming more public than what we already knew, what has been accomplished in those hearings to date?!

as someone else iterated, a cali pub is an 'oxymoron'...

Then what?

Then there will continue to be more debt and spending, more illegal immigration, more unchecked Ukraine funding, etc. So nothing different, just a D rubber stamping it all versus an R.

then status quo+ remains intact…

Now you know the true motivation behind Gaetz's move. Just a self serving action for him to fund raise off of plus get him more "street cred" with Maga folks. Unfortunately the dumb ass didn't think it thru and now he either looks like a saboteur or a moron. As pointed out earlier, these aren't mutually exclusive so could be both...

Matt vs McCarthy
What if it isn’t about Gaetz?

I don’t like him, he seems like a grifter and an opportunist. But he did receive concessions from McCarthy in order to vote for him back in January.

Sometimes the messenger sucks, but the result is good. If you take the personalities out of it and look at the facts, it’s not hard to understand why it happened.

They embrace evil.

And republicans are powerless to stop them because of their own political stupidity.

McCarthy is pretty useless, but there is no way this can turn out well.

I think the establishment republicans are powerless to stop them. I think the establishment republicans are complicit.

They're simply the face of the other side to make it look like we have choices.

There's a small group of republicans that are taking their jobs seriously. But people look at them like they're the bad guys.

Stinkfist is right that an outsider with no worry about holding a house seat being chosen could be the best option

which is why I favor looking outside the box at someone other than a sitting rep … I view this as an unparalleled opportunity … are the pubs savvy enough to figgle out that option??? #doubtful

and нет! … selecting DJT would be ridiculously tard…

if I had to guess, Jim Jordan is most likely the next speaker … I could live with that…

Yeah, Jordan would be great but you just know there are dozens of limp wristed 'tards who will vote with the democrat bloc against him.

IMO we are likely going to end up with some vanilla milk toast speaker who has to make concessions with every faction and who will only keep the seat warm until the next round of congressional elections.

if the latter happens, it’s no harm - no foul … the only exception would be the egg the pubs would earn on their face…

… however, if they outsource the position, it opens up possibilities to make inroads on the donk caucus if implemented successfully…

like the 12th man at A&M, it would be an additional voice that discourages the option of political suicide if the pubs actually decide to govern…
