RE: Rod Carey named OC at IU
How any objective person who watched NIU under Carey could think he would later be deserving of an OC position at a B10 school ( albeit a bad one) is perplexing.

His let’s save time on the clock to try and block a punt only to sit on the ball from near midfield to going for it on 4th n 18 from your 10 early in the game.

I don’t think any coach has ever lucked in to jobs for a decade. Probably any profession. Coach leaves NIU, promoted by default for bowl. Coach leaves Temple, hires lasts 3 weeks, bails. He gets hired, by Temple, the last one that season I believe.IU, alma mater, OL coach gets fired mid season ly, Carey there to get job. Fire OC this year, he gets job.

Pretty amazing how he just happens to be in the right place at the right time.

Literally Carey is like 2 steps forward and 2 steps back. Does **** that makes you crazy, then evens it out with something good. Not great. Not awful.

Dude drove me ficking nuts. I am glad he’s gone from here. He did well, but he maxed himself out. It’s best for him and NIU that’s he’s gone. We should all be glad for him, and be glad we are on a different path.

I don’t love this Hammock path but I think the team is growing.

Will have to grow quite a bit just to get to Carey's record - though it depends on which years to include. He inherited an Orange Bowl team and the more recent years were more mediocre - though even then he didn't have any really bad years. We've had 2+ already with TH.

Record isn’t my main measure - overall talent is better now. Coaching is far worse.

We all blamed hammock for sitting there doing nothing while Jackson trotted out the stupidest defense I have ever seen - I have to give him credit for making a change. Now it’s on to the offense. The strategy was outdated and totally idiotic. It needs to change. Hammock can’t sit around and wait to make a change.

If Hammock and Carey have one thing in common, it’s their inability to recruit any kind of QB depth.

In the end though, you are what your record says you are.

Not for a football “program.” Certainly for a season result though.

I think with this talent if there were real coaches for the offense this team would be much better.

Generally true but not an absolute. Otherwise, the 2021 and 2022 NIU teams were virtually the same rosters yet saw vastly different results. If your record are who you are, then they should have had similar records.

The problem with the NCAA football season is its way too short to actually grade out who's better, especially the conference schedule where no one plays a home and home and teams play an unbalanced schedule.

NIU certainly had a tough schedule. In first 6 games, NIU played four games on the road and only two home games. Toledo had four home games in their first 5. NIU was dealt last season's MAC West and MAC East division winners in Game 1 and Game 3 of the conference schedule. Except for WMU, who played three P5s and opened with Toledo for the first MAC game I'm not sure anyone else in the MAC has had it tougher so far.

In the end though it doesn't matter if you can recruit but not coach, or you can coach but not recruit. If your record is bad after a number of years, you aren't doing a good job (unless you're just playing a really hard schedule). I'd rather have a guy that can't recruit but wins more games than a guy that gets good talent and can't make use of it.

Indiana is a tough place to win at. If you’re the coach there, 7-5 is considered a good year.

The fans were annoyed at his play calling - especially the past couple games. It’s the weird Rod stuff he does - The streaky qb gets hot then he runs 3 times in a row for 3 yards and a FG attempt.

It’s the same **** that has plagued him every where he has gone. The good teams ride a hot QB. The good teams trust a QB to be a QB. That’s why they are there.

He's got a heck of an agent, we can say that. He got a six year deal when he went to Temple, and just got a two year deal at Indiana, even though it was widely speculated that Allen wouldn't be retained after this year.

A lot of coaches getting canned today. Should be a lot of players available for Hammock to go after with some playing experience

One of the QBs from Indiana is in the portal. Wouldn’t be a bad pick up as he mixed in the run somewhat, can sling it and would have 3 years left.

"In the event Carey were dismissed as a result of the firing of the head coach (in this case Tom Allen), Indiana would owe Carey 100% of remaining guaranteed compensation through June 30 following the head coach’s termination."

Carey is the luckiest coach in college football. It all started in 2012 when he went from offensive line coach to offensive coordinator to head coach in one year at NIU. If PJ Fleck never left NIU on February 3, 2012 , Rod would still be an offensive line coach someplace.
