Agree with you that Liberty may already be in coast mode. What’s crazy is that it may work in their favor. It all will depend on if the committee weighs record over who was played. They really don’t have a set rule on how they weight the contenders.

1. There is no way Liberty is in coast mode. We are not good enough to coast and can lose to every single team left on the schedule.

2. I am not sure an undefeated LU would be ranked above a 1 or 2 loss G5 that has played a tougher schedule. The CUSA OOC performance has done no one any favors. And the conference just doesn’t look that strong.

100% agree. Liberty’s OOC schedule isn’t anything to brag about this year and the conference’s OOC record doesn’t help either. I know many of us have emphasized how important doing well against non- conference teams matters. Even being undefeated doesn’t matter to some. I noticed that ESPN has Liberty picked to go to the Bahamas Bowl. I don’t know the ranking of bowl games, but in my mind the Bahamas Bowl is at the bottom, if not the bottom of bowl rankings. I think CUSA has jumped the MAC, but we still have a lot of room for improvement. Changing one’s image can be a difficult and slow process. For example, the ACC have 6 undefeated teams and the SEC and B1G have 7 combined. Who is thought of as weak and who is thought of as powerhouses?

I don't disagree. I have been after the administration to schedule more Power 5 teams but I keep getting back that none of them will schedule Liberty.

It’ll probably be Fresno State. They’re good enough to go undefeated against the remaining slate. Wyoming/Boise aren’t easy and SDSU has underperformed but could be a tough out as well.

Liberty has the easiest remaining schedule of the group. If they go undefeated winning, maintain their double-digit margin of victory, and have the teams above them lose at least 1. They’ll be in the conversation. That’s all you can really ask for.

WKU is a good program. They got destroyed against OSU and lost a close one to Troy. There’s no shame in that. I’d be surprised if WKU wasn’t a challenger for the league title.

Going 13-0 is tough no matter how easy your schedule is. But it is weak and I don’t see them getting the access spot out of it. Still, it would put them on the map just for being undefeated. They’d be ranked around 10-15 simply from attrition.

Too bad it all falls apart for them on October 10.

I imagine not much. It’s probably more related to doing 2 for 1s, no return game for a bought road game, or other contract issues. We haven’t had trouble scheduling them in the past. We’ve played both SEC and ACC teams and even Big 12. We had great schedules going before we entered CUSA. I think it’s more about us wanting more winnable OOC games till we get our feet wet in CUSA. Then we’ll try and take on more P5 opponents. If you ask me, we should be doing it now, even if it gets no return games.

It has been my observation that just about any school will schedule us non-conference. They just don't like the idea of being in the same league with us.

When we were moving up from FCS, P5 schools were more than happy to schedule us because they saw us as an easy fbs win. As soon as we stopped being an easy tuneup game for them they called and wanted out of future matchups using our move to CUSA and need to drop games anyway as the justification. I think it has everything to do with P5s not wanting to get beat by G5s rather than anything political. There is just no upside for them to play us.

I don't think any CUSA team will be in the running this year for the CFP slot.

Liberty's schedule strength is an issue and WKU's blowout loss to Ohio State and close loss to that other school will get in their way, even if they turn things around.

But that's OK this season, so long as both get bowl bids and beat their opponents silly. This is especially true for any CUSA school paired against a team from the "stronger" G5 conferences or (if it happens) a P5.

This is a transition year for all of us. All we can do is win the nonconference games left on the schedule and let everything else fall where it may. We're mainly setting the table for 2024 and beyond.
