UGLY ENDING

The game ended with a scuffle and penalty flags on both teams. Mertz took a knee and then took exception to defensive lineman Omari Thomas running into him. Benches cleared, and Tennessee defensive back Kamal Hadden and Florida guard Micah Mazzccua squared off like boxers. Mazzccua clearly threw a punch. Florida right tackle Damieon George was initially flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, and Thomas for targeting. But neither flag was enforced.

“That was just the weirdest ending to a game I've ever had," Mertz said. “I guess that's Florida-Tennesse.”

Heupel and Napier had an icy handshake at midfield before the teams had to return to the field for one final play.

“Do we want to be composed in that situation and all situations? Absolutely," Heupel said. "Their guy is dancing, and you have to go tackle him.”

Really? They came back out to finish the game, eh?

IMO, that whole nasty scenario was on Heupel for needlessly calling that last time out with what, 7 seconds left. It had no effect on the outcome of the game and it made FL have to run a play on 4th down - which set off the whole thing. They were down two scores - what’s the use? But then again, I can’t stand anything about that school in East TN….

I’ve been trying to tell this to all my UT friends who have drank the kool aid. I sent out a lot of “Feels like 98” text messages last night. I’ve heard this all preseason.

Not anymore. They rule all. Whatever gets the ratings up is fine with them.

Sadly due to wanting to make a highlight, most these kids don't learn how to properly tackle. I see kids leading with their shoulder and leaving their feet in 13 year old games regularly

UH is sort of like SMU, ranking about 8-9 in their respective markets. I suppose the media rationalizes that even if UH & SMU aren't strong draws their opponents will be in those big markets.
