Improving Tiger Football Attendance
During the Jeff & John Radio Show, a guest media personality brought up attendance at football games saying that it was reminiscent of church when compared to SH Classic Events. He indicated that it was not very attractive to teenagers and young adults.

I think that the university could do more to attract teenagers and young adults (college students). My suggestion is to promote small-to-medium sized band competitions among our students during Tailgating at Tiger Football Games. Perhaps, culminating into an internship with a music producer (if possible after the final game).

What’s your recommendation? Also, does anyone have the of Laird Veatch and the athletic department marketing group … 07-coffee3.

Win games & play a stronger schedule against schools of interest.

Adding concerts or other non-game attractions will only further diminish the product (and won't pay for the added attractions).

So if teenagers and young adults are requiring band competitions why do they only blare that crap "music" at the game?

He's a tip: the older fans. the ones with money, are most definitely turned off by that crap. Add in the drunks and you have a recipe for poor attendance.

I've turned down free tickets from the University because I just don't care to be around that atmosphere.

RE: Improving Tiger Football Attendance
vast majority of those that attend the SHC have no ties what so ever with the schools except for race.

the majority of the population doesn't relate to the U of M.

It's is not a HBC or a SEC school.

The majority of the white football fan base in the area have allegiance to SEC schools.

Short of bringing in Coach Prime type of personality there's little you can do except win and hope to steal a major local superstar player or two.

Got to expose the brand to the school age community and replenish the fan base.

And that's not going to happen as long as local media focuses most their attention on SEC.

Young people 30 and under don't watch local media anymore. They are not the answer.

I have always been disappointed that Tiger games don't have a more diverse crowd. It has always been that way too. Just another 10-12K fans and we wouldn't have to have this attendance discussion every freaking year.

Bring in the babes, where there are girls...the guys will follow. It works at the tailgate, so why not inside the stadium too.

Know what i would do but it will cause a backlash for a while.

Eliminate the SHC and then rotate having JSU and TSU as our FCS game.

Our annual FCS game should fall into one of three categories.

1) Schools with in our system: Since Lambuth isn't D1 then that's not an option.

2) Schools that are in state: This would include the likes of TSU.

3) Schools with ties to the U of Memphis: Teams with former Tiger players or coaches as head coaches.

If Fred Jones ever follows through with his treat to move the SHC then get JSU or TSU for a FCS opponent.

I mean, consider the source, but this is such nonsense.

I lived all over Texas. I guarantee you that in Dallas, local media is spending almost 100% of the time this week talking about the Cowboys. Maybe a word or two on the Rangers. The Mavs a little when the season starts. The Stars if they make the NHL playoffs. College football gets comparitively little run, and it's more likely to be Texas, A&M or Oklahoma. TCU and SMU and North Texas would kill for the attention that the U of Memphis gets in this market.

Same for U of Houston and Rice in Houston. Same for Tulane in New Orleans. Same for Cincy in Cincinnati. For a mid-major football program in a decent sized media market, we probably get more media coverage than any similar school in the country.

As far as hoops, I bet 98% of the sports fans in D/FW can't even name the head basketball coach at SMU.

So yeah, branding is not the issue.

Making the pom squad coed has done wonders for attendance
