RE: Improving Tiger Football Attendance
There are a few different situations that occur as to why we're having an attendance problem. One, losing Houston, Cincinnati, and UCF hurts because we lost three quality football teams. We also lost good coaches with Norvell, Heupel, Sonny Dykes Marcus Freeman, and Luke Fickell.
When it comes to Memphis, the games aren't entertaining because the offenses aren't entertaining. Who wants to watch a great defense? Nowadays, people want to be entertain.
In 2019, Memphis was 10th in the country in total yards (485), 17th in passing yards (298), 39th in rushing yards (186), and 8th in points (40). We we're 8th in the country in points with LSU, Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Clemson right about us. Think about the playmakers and quarterbacks those teams had in 2019.
So far in 2023, we're 40th in yards (436), 33rd in passing yards, 39th in rushing yards (157) , and 30th in points (37 points).
When it comes to the players, there's not a player from Memphis that the football fans and the city can connect to in a way. There's not an Anthony Miller, a Calvin Austin, and a Tony Pollard type of guy on the team. Acceding to Rivals, we had 20 players signed with Memphis in the 2022 class, we had two players from West Tennessee in the class, and one of them transferred already. The other player is Tevin Carter. Needless to say, we have 3 players from the state of Kansas committed on that class. On the class of 2023, we had 27 players committed and signed for Memphis. How many players from the city of Memphis? 0. In this current 2024 class, we have 14 players currently committed to play for us. How many from Tennessee? 0. How many from Mississippi? 1. Norvell's 2018 recruiting class had around 25 players, and 5 of them from West Tennessee and Memphis. With that being said, Silverfield has ditched recruiting in the city.
I remember watching TV and saw Pouncer running up the steps in a commercial to the press box as a marketing strategy to invest in season tickets. I haven't seen any TV commercials regarding to say. (I could be wrong, but still).
With all that being said, with about every game being on TV, people just aren't attending games like they have used to seeing. People would rather stay at home and watch the game on TV, instead of spending half of their day watching the game in person. It's a trend we're seeing nationwide. Is that an excuse? No. However, seeing that cars were broken into during the Navy game will prove that no fans are likely going to risk that again. The product on the field may not be worth it to some.
There are many ways to look at it, but the football team, the university, and the city can be equally to blame for that. It won't happen unless the team is more entertaining, it doesn't matter what conference they're in.
