Yeah but would SMU prefer the Pac over the ACC?

David Miller wanted ACC day 1

So did I
The Pac just seemed more attainable at the time then?

His expedition began in the summer of 2022 after SMU leaders, donors and consultants settled on a plan to pursue membership in the Big 12, Pac-12 or ACC. The Big 12 made sense geographically. The Pac-12 made sense realistically. And the ACC? It made sense culturally.

It was also a complete long shot.

“The ACC was not our original intention,” said Turner, the school president. “The Pac-12 was moving a lot quicker.”

Yeah, that makes sense.

Good on SMU for forcing the issue and getting into a good situation they can work with.

Phenomenal article.

It’s impressive that everything fell into place. Miller understood that the ACC needed money, and he positioned SMU as the enabler of expanding with Stanford & Cal.

I don’t buy the bit about other Texas schools “keeping” SMU out of the Big 12. Used to be the same rumors/ assumptions around TCU and Houston before those schools were eventually invited. Obviously expansion models are always going to have proponents and detractors but a model that makes sense with SMU would have been approved. The circumstances haven’t been right, at least not yet. In the Big 12 “we need to replace a Texas school” expansions in 2011 and 2021 they weren’t high enough on the list and with the 2023 expansion the Big 12 was focused on new markets and bigger names out west.

I disagree - TCU does not want SMU to be on equal footing. The recent announcement of a Pause in the annual game is further proof; I admit that TCU had nothing to gain from the game - if they win they were supposed to and if they lose, they get hammered. I think the pause will be short now that we are going into a P4/5 conference that can hold its own with the Big 12.

All I can say is that TCU fans/brass used to say "Baylor and Tech do not want TCU on equal footing" until the day TCU was in. Houston fans/brass used to say "Baylor, TCU and Tech fans do not want Houston on equal footing" until the day Houston was in*. Clearly those fans were wrong. If another Big 12 Texas school were to depart for whatever reason, I am certain one of the first calls would be to SMU.

*I remember when the rumor mill of UH (and Cincy/BYU/UCF) joining the Big 12 were picking up I texted my cousin who is a huge UH fan and very involved. I told him it really looks like is was going to happen and even the day before he said "Baylor and Tech will never let us in".

Yoou may be right, but the big difference with TCU/SMU is that we are both in DFW.
