RE: Breaking (McMurphy): ACC will add Stanford, Cal and SMU in 2024
A big win for Jack Swarbrick, personally.
He put his reputation on the line by advocating for this expansion and got his desired result.

Coming from the guy who said we were second class citizens for taking a half B12 share for a couple of years.
And Stanford and Cal rejected the B12 for the opportunity to sleep on Florida State's couch, huh? Riiiiiight.

The big question I now have Pete is if the SEC takes the three no votes who is #4 or is someone slipping over to the ACC to keep the SEC at a profitable 18?
Options:
1. 2022 rumors were true and #4 is Miami
2. N.C. State voted for because they are coming with UNC anyway.
3. It's about the value added so it will be either Virginia or Virginia Tech.
4. 2011's promise comes home to roost and it's Duke for #4
5. ESPN protects all of Atlanta and it's Georgia Tech
6. Kansas for balance.
It'll be fun to see if first they are all headed to the SEC, and second who comes next.
So besides schools in the SEC or BIG10 (or the 3 presumably incoming schools), who would you list as the next top 3 football schools in the country?

Interesting, now you’ll will have Clemson, Florida State and UNC playing conference games in DFW. Deep in SEC territory.
You have Utah, Arizona, Arizona State, Oklahoma State playing conference in Houston. Also SEC territory.
Wonder how the SEC reacts to the ACC move. DFW should be be their sacred ground.

Not going to lie…this is sickening as Memphis fan to watch SMU get called up.
In last 10 years in the AAC….SMU never played in AAC championship football game. Memphis played in 3.
In last 30 years…SMU made 2 NCAA basketball tournaments. Memphis made 14.
In football, Memphis attendance many years has been 2x SMU. In basketball it is a 4x.
Let that sink in.
This has nothing to do with winning more, better attendance, ratings, etc.

If those 3 leave, I think Memphis would be a good backfill option, right along with USF, and UConn.

SEC won't react to the ACC move. They don't care one iota about SMU. UT/OU/aTm cover Dallas at 10x the coverage of SMU.

In 2021….the Big 12 took biggest universities (Cincy, UCF, Houston) we were told. Memphis just missed the cut. Nothing but respect to those schools. Those are our best peers.
2023 - Big takes 4 corners…no issue there.
2023 - ACC takes 3….but they want the most prestigious selections. Stanford and Cal are horrible and football and basketball. SMU has never won anything in AAC.
This feels like you’re in AAA baseball and you have a higher batting average, more home runs, better stats……and they pull up the guy next to you to the MLB team who is underperforming but was the higher draft pick.

They aren’t happy with NC State for flipping.
I thought Clemson would flip with them.
This result is less fun! With Stanford and Cal dangling, it gives more permutations for what happens next.

I have always viewed realignment as a ladder approach. Some schools higher on the ladder, some below when you take all criteria in.
Watching Cincy, Houston, UCF…..those were schools who were alongside Memphis at the top of the AAC year after year. They were on the same level of the ladder as you…or really close.
SMU….has never been better in football/basketball. They are lower on the success ladder than Memphis in primary sports. So yea, watching them get promoted is maybe even tougher.

Also interesting….did SMU just set a new G5 precedent to moving up?
If you want to come into our P4 league you have to take no money for a LONG time.

I feel your pain. SMU can be compared to an undergraduate student getting an 'unpaid internship' in their chosen field.
At first glance, people worry that the student is being exploited because they work for free.
After a closer look, people learn that most of these students are from affluent families. That's who can afford to go unpaid while gaining a career advantage. Their classmates who really need the money don't apply for the internship. They have jobs in restaurants and bookstores.
Things will work out for Memphis. You see how often the Tigers are mentioned. They will get their call up.
The race is not always to the swift.
