Exclamation Rice vs Texas September 2, 2023
A moderate amount of chatter here about HRS, realignment and volleyball., but it looks like we have a football game this weekend. Against UT, who is ranked #11. Kickoff in Austin at 2:30. Weather forecast is sunny and a temp of about 97-98 at the beginning of the game and rising to above 100 by the 4th Q.

The last time we played them, which was in Austin a couple of years ago, we lost 58-0.

The floor is open for discussion

Sagarin has ut as their preseason #5 team. Some people never learn.
texas is a 35-point favorite, and I think that's a pretty good line - I'll say ut 49, Rice 15.

ESPN gives the Owls a 2.9% chance of winning. Not that I believe ESPN put any effort into this prediction.

I just hope the payday is significant. Can’t imagine this will go well for the Owls.

I think JT Daniels, McCaffrey, and the offense actually will move the ball a bit.

Defense can't stop anything unless it self-inflicted errors by Texas.

Horns cover the spread with a 56-17 win and worry about secondary going into Alabama game and Bloom talks improvement since last Texas game.

Agreed with this. I'm expecting a similar score to the 2019 game but this time we'll get the points in the first half, not in garbage time. We should give them a small scare before they pull away though I'm not sure if that scare will last through 1 quarter like USC last year, or three quarters like Arkansas in 2019

I agree with you, if we actually try to move the ball. But Bloom tends to be more concerned with burning clock in these games, running into the back of his own line repeatedly.

63-3. Rice kicks a FG with 0:15 remaining in the 4th quarter.

We didn't kick the sad field goal at the end of the last game and we will never make that mistake again! Could've been a lovely 58-3

New QB, with an OC that doesn't have to PTR.
No film for UT to review.

We manage to get 21 before Texas adjusts and shuts us down.
How much the Longhorns score will only be a concern for those betting on the spread.

I had penciled this in for possibly attending ….but the heat and the general miserable atmosphere/ experience at DKR has discouraged me this year.
Will be watching from home and hoping to see some significant improvement over our last appearance there.

DKR really is not a great atmosphere or experience. I grew up in SEC country on Alabama-Tennessee, Alabama-LSU, Auburn-Georgia, Auburn-Georgia Tech, and of course Alabama-Auburn, so I must say that I was very underwhelmed by DKR, or Memorial Stadium as it was known back then. Part of that may have been that it wasn't a great night for the home team, at least the last few minutes, as a really bad Rice team won 20-17. So I enjoyed it, but the TexasU fan base had a miserable end to their night.

This appears to be a spoof AI generated story of the game. We lose 52-10.

I worked the last Rice game at DKR and was surprised how much worse that stadium looks than Kyle or McClane. It reminds me of the Rose Bowl - all the new bells and whistles don’t hide the fact that the stadium is well past its prime.

Of course the true is about many other stadiums we know.

I was there, and I must say the atmosphere of Teasips crying was wonderful.

I think the stadium at DKR is nice enough but 1) there’s not many great tailgate spots unless you’re Greek-affiliated and/or have a campus parking spot. 2) The biggest game of the year (OU) is at a neutral site so the rivalry atmosphere is lacking (it’ll be better once the A&M game returns).

That was pretty special.

Some perspective on how far Rice has fallen since then. After that game, Rice's record in the most recent 36 games with TexasU, 1930-1965, was 18 wins, 17 losses, 1 tie. At that point, Rice had more wins over TexasU than any other school--more than Oklahoma, more than aTm.

You guys were there for the 1929 game? Dayum, you’ve been around for a while.

Why would we do that? To give the backup kicker some work after our started misses 3 of his 7 PATs?
