How long to work expansion folk into a football schedule
How long to work SMU, Cal, and Stanford into an ACC football schedule?

Only NC State and Duke have an opening for a 12th game next year.

That's a lot of holes to make and then fill.

The three “permanent” rivals will be quickly changed for many schools. For example, UVa v Louisville can be modified to UVa v Cal and Louisville v SMU. It’s the eight game conference schedule that gets changed. The impact to OOC games should be minimal.

Nobody has said a word about adding a 9th conference game. The games for the new members will be found by changing the already announced conference schedules for future years.

This would work for me.

And you gotta assume that Cal and Stanford would be permanent opponents themselves.

It wouldn't be a stretch for SMU to pop up on at least one of Stanford or Cal's permanent opponent list.

But the ease of the 3-5-5 rotation would go away since there would be 17 schools to work out. And I'm too tired to even take a stab at how this would look.

I thought we'd be using a 4-4-4-4 scheduling model where you have 4 permanent partners and then play 4 of the remaining 12 teams each year and play everyone home and away every 6 years.

Anything you do pisses off someone. Some of the normal rivalry games just don;t draw eyeballs because they are inside the State of NC affairs.

No one wants to watch Duke and UNC play football. Nor Duke and WF play football. I'd like everyone to be able to play more than 8 conference games if it suits them.

Yes, but the problem is that the extra rivalry games involve Duke and WF. When you start flexing to protect UNC and Duke you can't always get past the fact that Duke has often sucked and even when they do not suck, no one watches them play football.

Outside the NRV, Southside and Tidewater Va, NC, and the area north of the Big Peach (Gaffney, SC) no one cares about watching NC State and Wake Forest play a game.

Even then the audience beyond NC State fans will be UNC fans hoping for some sort of scoreless tie. The state's dynamic would be different if Duke had moved to Charlotte instead of Durham or if Duke had stayed in the Triad and WF moved to Charlotte back in the day, or NC State had started in Charlotte instead of being hijacked and moved to Raleigh at the beginning.

This'd work for me.

You get to everyone at least once every 3 years.

At some point, I'd expect to go to a 9-game conference slate. Which I know would piss off FSU ... but Jimmy crack corn.

Wake often manages to beat State....it makes me smile.

Wake or State would have developed into monster schools & athletic programs with the support of Charlotte's aggressive business community mindset.

It appears as if Notre Dame has an open slot for next year, too, but Stanford is already on their schedule.

I don't expect ND would agree to add another ACC opponent every year. I wouldn't be surprised if they decide to schedule both USC and UCLA in the future so they play in Los Angeles every year.

That is a possibility, but for decades they've recruited both No. Cal. and So. Cal.
