Quote:Nearly three years after Donald Trump’s November 2020 general election loss, Democrats continue to blame him for the country’s economic and political issues.

Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) remarked during a Sunday appearance on the NBC program “Meet the Press” that Trump eroded trust in government. He attributed President Joe Biden’s dismal polling to Trump’s acts.

“I think it’s our system,” Walz told program host Chuck Todd. “I think Donald Trump and the Republican Party have poisoned it to people.”

Todd asked the Minnesota Democrat why fewer people want Biden to run again compared to the number expressing interest in another Trump run.

“No one trusts our institutions, no one trusts Congress, no one trusts any of us, because all they do is attack our families, do those types of things,” the governor responded.

Walz emphasized that for those who prioritize “reproductive freedoms,” a proactive climate agenda and “decency in the White House,” Biden remains the ideal candidate.

He recalled the 2020 campaign where the Democratic narrative was about restoring “decency” to the White House. Biden himself had tweeted about bringing “honor and decency” back to Washington.

Some critics have pointed to incidents during Biden’s term, such as the discovery of cocaine in the West Wing and a topless protest by a trans woman activist on the White House lawn as contradictions to his promises.

Walz also shared that he had discussions with Michigan Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Wisconsin Democrat Gov. Tony Evers on strategies to secure a win for Biden in the Midwest.

“The fact of the matter is, this isn’t about Joe Biden’s age,” Walz assured Todd. “This is about the democracy. And, as we get closer to the election, they’ll see that.”

He defended the president’s efforts on the economy, attributing some of the economic challenges to global phenomena and the impact of the COVID pandemic.

“The Biden agenda has actually done more to tame inflation, to start to bring back manufacturing, to focus on high-tech chip industry and to focus on climate change and infrastructure than any other country in the world,” he claimed.

Recent polls suggest the public’s perception might differ.

An Associated Press/NORC poll indicated that only 36% of Americans approve of Biden’s handling of the economy. The same poll showed 42% approval of Biden’s overall performance as president.

Another poll from Yahoo News/YouGov in July revealed that 53% of Democrats want Biden as the nominee for the next election, while 35% prefer another candidate.

Concerns about Biden’s age and health have been prevalent among voters.

A June ABC News poll found that 68% of voters expressed concerns about the president’s health, with 55% considering it a “major” concern.
