I have one nephew who is as left as they come. We don't talk much but I'd never disown him.

Most people I know fit mostly or completely in 1 of 4 groups:

1. Anti-establishment Trumpy Republicans.

2. More traditional Republicans.

3. Younger progressive Dems that don't really like Biden and are more left on economics.

4. Older MSNBC Biden bot Democrats that tends to care more about social issues and don't understand why the people in group #3 don't enthusiastically showing up to vote Biden.

Group #3 gets a bad rap, but group #4 easily takes first place for being the most self-righteous and being the most likely to attribute political differences to immorality, which is what causes political differences to mess up personal relationships. People may not agree, but that's my experience.

Interesting. I don't think I fit into any of those categories. Nor even close. I'm an independent, I hate both parties for different reasons, and I think the fed gov should be reduced almost to ashes.

I vote for ideas, not parties. Or at a minimum, the least unfavorable choice out of a sorry lot.

But since at least 2016, the Dems have shown themselves to be evil, corrupt and anti-American, so they are off the table for me until further notice. Probably forever.

The Repubs are mostly milquetoast idiots, but they have their share of corporate globalists, too. I don't care for Trump, either. I voted 3rd party in 2016, and for Trump in 2020 b/c he's certainly better than Biden by a mile.

He has policies I agree with, BUT...his personality gets in the way of everything he tries to do, and now he has us in a mess where it looks like the senile corrupt basturd or somebody worse could slip in, given their cheating ways. I would be a stronger supporter if I thought Trump was really for America, but I think he is more for Trump. I will vote for him if necessary, but def not my first choice. Right now, it's Vivek.

What we really need is a full USA rebuild (but sure as hell not a "global reset"), but I don't see a realistic path forward. Disheartening.

I only have extended family that are liberal, & don't see them enough for it to be a problem.

Friendships, yeah, it's all they wanted to talk about. I didn't have the patience, & probably still don't.

I've had a friend disown us. I don't give a rat's ass what my friends do in their church, their bedroom or their polling place.

no, the opposite. They just want anybody but Trump to run on the GOP side even if they agree with half of what he did in office.

Thanks, makes sense. I was being facetious b/c my sister is a lefty, and your "conservative" friends obviously aren't Dem lovers.

RE: Have you have to disown family members or friends due to politics?
I am actually surprised by the question. I can count on one hand the number of friends/family and business associates whose political views align even semi-closely with mine. Most who I deal with aren’t vocal about it. But even the vocal ones would never put at risk a relationship that we both value.

Our personal and professional relationships, and the common goals and projects on which we interact daily, are all way more important than politics. I honestly don’t think I know anyone who would disown me for my various unpopular political views.

Part of that I am sure is because I am constantly moderating my opinions in my daily life. I may internally think someone is dangerously wrong, but what is accomplished by aggressively pointing it out in a way that is going to override whatever it is that brought us together in the first place?

And now that I think on it, this in fact is one of the (several) reasons that I enjoy posting here among you zoo animals: the chance to air my own sad and foolish views with complete impunity. My sincere thanks and appreciation go out to you all for serving the role as receptacle for my garbage pile of opinions.

I also think that most of them when they get into the booth in November, hold their nose and vote Trump

It didn't need answering. It was facetious, which I'm sure you're smart enough to figure out, to make a simple point. No group of conservatives is going to think Dems do nothing wrong, whether they hate Trump or not.

But I wasn't asking you in the first place. I was specifically asking fsquid about his relatives. You can't answer that.

And the answer you gave, a third grader knows. Not everybody is as stupid as you think, Mr. Condescension.

RE: Have you have to disown family members or friends due to politics?
I would never disown anybody over politics, family or friends. I've had a couple of acquaintances that distanced themselves from me over political views but I personally didn't consider it a great loss, as they were not long time close friends. I kind of feel that if you feel the need to disown somebody over political matters, your focus and priorities in your life are out of whack. Or to put it more bluntly, you need to get a life.

In my family there is kind of an unwritten rule that we don't discuss politics when we are together and it is a large family. It works well. If political discussions are had, it is usually in a one on one setting where both of us agree that it is what we wish to do.

For decades, I worked with a large group of people whose political views were pretty much at odds with my own. We never really talked politics and were all good friends. In fact, after I left that setting, a few of them found out about my political beliefs and were rather astounded as they never even sensed it. Yet we remain close friends to this day.

There is so much more to life than politics and to let it divide us is destructive.

Im not the one asking idiotic questions, then. Thank you for clearing that up for us.

If you only deem that a question be answered by only a single individual, I suggest not using a board post. Yes, how dare one answer a board post. The horror. How do you manage dealing with that sheer audacity of answering a generalized question? Oh, you get butthurt and say no one should answer it. Or no one but some person that you solely think should.

Thank you for clearing that up for us. Sounds like quite the system there.

If in your mind no one else was supposed to answer in any form, maybe you just could skip over you shallow response to mine instead? I guess that didnt cross your mind..... Glad to know the internal AAA Rules on Board answers.
