I’d take you up on it if I were in town. Will definitely catch a match, or four, when the team travels to DFW during league play.

Preview from RiceOwls.com and the Rice Owls app:

Quote:By: Tim Andrzejewski (tim.andrzejewski@rice.edu)
HOUSTON — Coming off a conference championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament Round of 32, the No. 23 Rice Volleyball team begins its 2023 schedule on Saturday when it welcomes crosstown foe and 19th-ranked Houston for a 5 p.m. first serve at Tudor Fieldhouse.

The Owls return four starters and nine letterwinners from last year's team that went 27-4 and won the Conference USA championship. Seniors Nia McCardell and Danyle Courtley all earned C-USA All-Conference honors, while McCardell was named the C-USA Libero of the Year.

The Owls have won the last three meetings against UH and six of the last seven. Last year, Rice swept the Cougars in both team's season opener.

General admission tickets are $7.13 and can be bought at RiceOwls.com.

I see what they did there… #713

Last year these two teams played in the actual season opener (which as mentioned above Rice won)

Houston didn’t play an exhibition and was flat. Rice was on point after playing an exhibition against top ranked Texas.

Houston coach famously noted (complained?) how much of an (unfair?) advantage Rice got because of that…

Nope, this match doesn’t mean anything at all, yeah… sure… 03-wink

Agreed. While it's true that all players will see action, it's highly likely that Genny will have what she expects to be her starting rotation of 8 - 10 players playing together the majority of the time to build chemistry and cohesion. It's important to see how they react when challenged, and UH will be a really good test to see if we're ready. Let's not forget that we play 4 Top 25 teams (and 6 NCAA tournament teams) in the first 3 weeks of the season.

And if Rice does well I'm sure there will be an excuse that they had a chance to play together in the spring and had the Brazil trip...

Blown out in the 4th set: 13-25. Disappointing end to what was up till then a very close match. My question is whether our starters were still in?

No idea. Mansfield, Knobbe, Weske, Harris, Kostelecky, Courtley were the starters for the third set. I think we might have been missing a few players (like maybe Maruska?). UH had almost twice as many players listed on their roster as we did. It seemed like we only had 11 or 12 dress out?

Did Maruska and McCardell dress? Those two are arguably our two best players. BTW, we only have 15 players on the roster.

I really didn’t stay long but I believe mccardell was dressed. We certainly had someone in the libero outfit. Foord (sp?), the two Fort Bend hitter/blockers were dressed, and I think the other setters too were dressed. The ones I am not sure I saw were Maruska and the other two freshmen (Love and Gutierrez). But I am not really sure. I saw a lot of the basketball players (men and women) at the football scrimmage and those players I can identify a lot better than the volleyball players.

According to video on Instagram, Maruska was dressed. But not sure what lineup we went with in the 4th.
