RE: Lahaina, Maui, has been absolutely devastated by fire
I grew up on a farm. We had both fields and woods. I remember as a kid walking back into the woods and hillsides and being able to go wherever I wanted with no problem whatsoever.
All these years later my dad still lives on that land. I took my boys back into the same woods I used to stroll through to show them some things and I thought we were in vietnam. There were some areas I couldn't have made it through with a machete. Lots of invasive brush somehow have taken over the area. I thought to myself what a tinderbox those woods would be if it somehow ignited.
My dad said he's contacted the local conservation officer who he said just kind've shrugged their shoulders. And every fall he gets his now 85 year old a$$ out there and does battle with it.
I also remember as a kid farmers doing controlled burns to keep weeds and brush down. It doesnt seem that anyone doesn't anything like that any more.

I have three or four different routes to drive to work. Two of them go through a national forest. Here in Texas, they definitely do controlled burns on a regular basis.

They do burns in South MS all the time. Have a large craine refuge on both sides of I-10 in Jackson County. Always backing up traffic.

Things that make me go hmmmmm.......
Are these facts proof of anything? Of course not. Not saying that. Other people are noticing these things and pointing them out. One of them seems to me like a co-incidence, the other just evidence that somebody loves Maui and wants to increase her holdings there with all her money.
I've already been hearing reports on these Maui fires that mention......climate change. The fires were fanned by winds from a nearby Hurricane. Not like we haven't had hurricanes before. But I fully expect to see and hear more references to climate change. You remember what Rahm Emmanuel said, "never let a crisis go to waste."
Sobering that as the death toll in Hawaii nears 100 that they say that around 1,000 people are missing. Might end up as the worst wildfire toll in American history. With that will come lots of questions such as why the emergency warning system did not work.
Then, there's this - predators already swooping in to Maui.

Im supposed to fly there on Halloween. Not sure if it’ll happen now.
Last I saw 1000 were still missing. Seems surreal that is even possible

Our least impressive press Secretary in our history sure looks dumber today. If you are going to talk about a Senator of your own party (or any party for that matter) in comments to the press it might help if you knew what you are talking about. First, get her name correct. Then, try to get the gender correct - even if you believe that there are 456 genders.

RE: Lahaina, Maui, has been absolutely devastated by fire
Maui Wildfires’ Top Cop Was Vegas Shooter Incident Commander.
Quote:John Pelletier, the current Chief of the Maui Police Department amid the ongoing Hawaiian wildfires, acted as Incident Commander for the mysterious Las Vegas Police mass shooting – the largest in American history – in 2017. He recently trained with the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).
Pelletier has become the face of the Hawaii-based police department since being elected chief in late 2021. Before that, Pelletier served 22 years in the Las Vegas Police Department, rising through the ranks to become captain of the department.
His contribution on the night of the mass shooting in 2017, which witnessed the deaths of some 58 people, has even been recognized in a book on “Effective Crisis Communication:”
“Captain Pelletier experienced a challenging crisis context to lead through following the October 1 shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was able to navigate the uncertainty of the crisis, coordinate and collaborate with key stakeholders during the crisis, and take action…”
To date, there has never been a particularly compelling explanation for how or why 64-year-old Stephen Paddock opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay resort, killing 59 and injuring 527 people.
Pelletier recently obtained a certificate in criminal justice from the FBI National Academy, with Former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr and current FBI Director Christopher Wray both present at his graduation.

RE: Lahaina, Maui, has been absolutely devastated by fire
Hawaii governor says state is looking to 'acquire land' that was destroyed in fires
Quote:On Monday, Hawaiian governor Josh Green announced that his administration was considering acquiring properties in the seaside resort town of Lahaina that had been destroyed by the recent wildfires.
He vowed to prevent foreign buyers from swooping in to exploit the tragedy, suggesting the state was better suited to take control of the land.
"I'm already thinking of ways for the state to acquire that land so that we can put it into workforce housing, to put it back into families, or make it open spaces in perpetuity as a memorial to the people who were lost," Green said while standing amongst the rubble.
"We want this to be something we remember after the pain passes as a magic place. Lahaina will rebuild. The tragedy right now is the loss of life. The buildings can be rebuilt over time, even the banyan tree may survive, but we don't want this to become a clear space where then people from overseas just come and decide they're gonna take it. The state will take it and preserve it first."
In a separate press conference, Green reiterated his committment to ensure the land was protected for residents, and revealed that he had spoken with the Hawaiian attorney general regarding "options to do a moratorium on any sales of properties that have been damaged or destroyed."
"It's going to be a very long time before any growth or housing can be built, so you will be pretty poorly informed if you try to steal land from our people and then build here," he said, adding, "I will try to allow no one from outside our state to buy any land until we get through this crisis and decide what Lahaina should be in the future."
According to the Honolulu Civil Beat, over 2,000 structures were destroyed in the fire, three quarters of which were residential. Nearly 100 people have been found dead, though that number is expected to rise as crews continue searching the area.

Like I said in another thread

RE: Lahaina, Maui, has been absolutely devastated by fire
So according to NBCNews, CNN, NY Times, etc:
"The fires started spreading widely on 11 Aug 2023, fueled in part by violent winds from Hurricane Dora, churning more than 800 miles away, decimating homes and businesses, launching urgent rescue missions, knocking out power and communication services, and even forcing some people into the ocean to avoid being burned"
So someone explain this book released on Amazon.
Fire and Fury: The Story of the 2023 Maui Fire and its Implications for Climate Change Kindle Edition
Notice the Publication Date. (spoiler: 10 August 2023).
