What a disaster. Neither the money nor the exposure required. When the escape pods start shooting away, even that deal with Apple could vanish.

It's going to be like that scene in spaceballs with everyone trying to get to the escape pods.

XII has pick of the litter in this scenario.

Maybe UO/UW all but have B1G offers in hand and don't care.

If that's the case then the Cal Bears get the last pod out of the conference.

The AppleTV subscription for MLS is a season pass.

I could see a PAC 12 Football Season pass from August to December and a PAC 12 Basketball Season pass from October through March. No proration needed.

that's what Bob Thompson thought.
Directv is adding red zone to the sports pack, that's cool, it's like $7 a month. I'll get NHL network, CBS Sports again. I'll cancel after wk 18 of the nfl

...that makes sense - about the only way you could do it as a 'one-time fee' for the season - may well have been noted already, so sorry if it has...

...guess I was thinking about ESPN+, which people do 'seasonally' drop... ...mine was inadvertently dropped whn we had a credit card hack attempt/then new card and info, which voided the autodraft... 03-drunk

Apple doesn't allow things to be in the press until they want it out in the press. No numbers have been released, people are speculating. If Apple wanted the numbers out, Wilner and Canzano would be reporting them because they, at least, have sources in the room this morning.

I'm sorry. I just think this proposed deal is bad. Sure, if they hit those accelerators, that's good for them. But what happens if they lose subscribers? "Oh, sorry. You lost customers, which put you under the threshold for this accelerator. We have to lower your payment per school." No! Absolutely not.

...yeah, wonder if they would even do an "a'la carte" deal (doubtful) - perhaps you could get a certain team's games only? Again, probably a bit too diced up to be feasible financially...

I was just thinking about this. Is Thamel saying that it might exceed the Big 12 deal in 2029, or is he saying that it might exceed the AVERAGE of the Big 12 deal of $31.6m eventually? B/c by the end of the deal, the Big 12 deal will be paying out quite a bit more than $31.6m per year. This sounds like Kliavkoff was being deliberately obtuse in his leaking in order to confuse people who majored in Journalism instead of Math.

I think Apple is ripping themselves off. I might give them $15M per school.

There's not much security in the 'gig economy' model. Security is a pressing need if you're a university president facing big, unknown new expenses.

Apparently PAC schools weren't able to get help with linear broadcast from the ACCN.

Does anyone think that the PAC 9 can realistically hit the escalators necessary for this deal to yield the results desired?

Am I correct that you have to buy AppleTV and a PAC package or can the PAC package be purchased independently?

This seems like a deal that results in the PAC 9 being out-of-sight and out-of-mind. Only the most die hard and loyal fans are going to buy the package. Most sports bars aren’t going to be inclined to shell out for it either.

If true the pac is through and we might not see much more of this super conference crap.

I feel quite the opposite. The demise of the PAC is a sign glowing in neon light for everyone to see who are willing to open their eyes, that the networks want consolidation which will mean bigger conferences. The PAC had their opportunities but they were never willing to play ball with network execs and this is the outcome. Bend the knee and kiss the ring or else....

I don't think that it's in the networks' best interest to have fewer Conferences. The Pac just stumbled their way to oblivion by hiring the wrong people and trusting those people to know how to negotiate their way out of a wet paper bag. Facing the choice of ~ $400m to the Pac for all 10 teams or $11.6-20m per team for up to 4 teams, Fox and ESPN understandably decided to save a bunch of money. If Kliavkoff had settled around $300m immediately after the USCLA departure, ESPN and Fox would have happily re-upped and let the Big 12 twist in the wind, and in that scenario the Pac probably only adds 1 or 2 Big 12 teams (I'm thinking SDSU and TCU). There'd still be a "P5", sort of, certainly a more recognizable one than where we're headed now.

It was all about business for ESPN and Fox, they didn't have to come off as the Conference killers like ESPN did when the BE imploded.

not if what 365 said is true about needing 10M subs to hit it.
