the FEF doesn't have the seating capacity of many larger arenas
They averaged over 17,200 per game for 41 games, which came out to 94% capacity
A better comparison might be to equate it to attendance at 94% of Simmons capacity
Simmons wasn't built (and expanded) with the best interests of the UofM in mind. It was built for the bowl game and expanded for the NFL.
What you have is a fb stadium that is one of the largest - if not THE largest - G5 stadiums in the country, compared to an NBA arena that is on the lower side of capacity. So of course the % of capacity looks better for the Grizz.
Another fact is, the Tigers can play Bethune Cookman and have more people in attendance than any game the Grizz will play this year.
It's beyond ludicrous to think the bar for the Tigers is to sell out a 50k+ stadium playing a G5 schedule.
no it's not
football games generally outdraw basketball games on a per game basis, nothing new there.....by your logic, Kentucky, Kansas and Duke should be considered football schools
It's all about optics there, pally
Give us an example of a G5 selling out 55k for every game.
The rest...so you're saying football > basketball?
I would have never put it that way, but okay.
Tigers fb attendance (5-yr avg)
27k
#66 out of 133
#5 of 66 G5 programs
Grizz attendance (5-yr avg)
16k
#25 of 30
#6 of 7 "small markets"
Tigers vs Bethune Cookman = 27k Grizz vs Lakes, game 5 of playoffs = 18k (and not a sellout, BTW)
...is what it is...
Not having a hard sellout for that game is inexcusable.
But it's not only football.
How many times lately have we've had to settle for partial payments from the Grizzlies due to falling below the attendance threshold?

If I’m Mayor Strickland I make the $200+ Million Memphis Tigers ask contingent on them selling out the rest of the season at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. Otherwise $350 Mill to the Grizzlies. It’s very simple.

So many bring up the size of the forum.
But despite having a NBA title contender and a MVP candidate on the team.
The Griz do NOT sellout the "small" forum.
It's only been the past few years that attendance has surpassed 90% of capacity.
Many of the most vocal grizzlies fans on social media and calling into radio shows don't attend the games.
There's only a small percentage of the community that can afford to buy tickets.
And nothing is going to change that no matter what we do.
13.6% of shelby county live at or below poverty level with the overwhelming majority of that coming from Memphis where 22.6% live at or below poverty level.
This may be, but it only takes maybe 1,500-2,000 in real numbers to bump up the capacity %-age.
And with the higher-than-average paying jobs BOC will bring in won't hurt.
6,000 direct jobs + 4 to 5 indirect jobs for each direct job, and you're looking at 30,000-36,000 decent paying jobs.
And BOC is starting to hire some of the corporate positions.
Interesting info starts at 5:38...

RE: Calkins: Is there enough cash for the Grizzlies and the football stadium? Maybe not.
The Grizz are going to take a hit with attendance this year. They lost a fair amount of local goodwill with the Ja Morant and Dillon Brooks drama. Add to it downtown crime and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a 20% drop in attendance
RE: Calkins: Is there enough cash for the Grizzlies and the football stadium? Maybe not.
Interesting that Calkins tweet has a picture of the Liberty Bowl home side for a USFL game and not a Tiger game, where, I think, the home stands would be fuller

It boggles my mind that he has that much clout in this city. It really does. He’s the biggest douchebag in our history and I never thought anyone would be worse that Lapides

Caulkins is the worst kind of human. He likes to talk all progressive and woke but do you know how much he volunteered during the short time his kid actually attended public school? Zero!!
He was there quite a bit to pick up. Never offered.
Oh, but he’s busy. What do you expect him to do? Well we had an auction even to help raise funds for various activities and we reached out to him to see if he could get a signed jersey from Calipari/Tigers or maybe something from the Grizzlies.
His reply was something along the lines of he wouldn’t feel comfortable asking for that.
I haven’t paid attention to him in the 15 years since. Blowhard.

The funding plan is out there. But we still haven't seen the specifics as to where the HALF A BILLION dollars to upgrade the forum, is going to be spent.
Not a dime till a plan is released as to how the money is to be spent.

The main thing they’re going to do is flip the lower level with the upper levels. More seats in lower level means higher price tickets.
That’s going to cost a bunch of money.

So I would assume you would have very limited seating for at least 2 seasons ... No way you do that type of project in a June-October timeframe ....

A half a billion dollars of *our money* so a guy who's worth 20 times that much can make even more.

More seats in same space means less legroom.
Pyramid 2.0.
Legroom was one of the reasons we built forum in the first place.
