Fortune: Apple TV is accused of botching Lionel Messi’s unveiling
Quote: But when the big event came, the tech giant’s broadcast fell short. Technical difficulties like shaky audio dampened what should have been the tech company’s big moment, leaving fans perplexed.

The technical glitches made for an inauspicious start to Apple’s revolutionary deals with both the league and Messi.

Apple TV having some growing pains

This event doesn’t instill a lot of confidence in the Apple TV product be it MLS coverage or PAC-12 coverage.

This was a major event for Apple TV and they botched it.

Seems to be more of production issues. MLS produce the content apple just hosts it. For games and any in studio MLS stuff, it's been great. Teams make additional content like a team specific game preview or player interview and those vary in quality alot. I'd guess since this wasn't a game, or a studio show to cover everyone, it was on inter to produce this themselves and they were a little over their heads.

I don't think this should scare the pac away. They already invested i the network so they have infrastructure in place to make this work. As an MLS fan, the move from rsn's and occasional national games to apple has been GREAT. It's so much easier to follow my team and the league with it all in 1 place on a consistent schedule.

Apple production according to DailyMail

Quote: Apple is rightly treating the game like a massive spectacle, employing 18 cameras, four 'super slow-motion cameras,' a Skycam and even a drone for the match, according to MLS.

I think the daily mail gets made fun of for how poorly they cover their own league in England. Not sure I trust them to know who is responsible for what in an MLS broadcast.
As of the 2023 season, all MLS telecasts will be produced in-house by the league as part of a joint venture between IMG and NEP Group.
RE: Fortune: Apple TV is accused of botching Lionel Messi’s unveiling
Apple is still a small player in streaming. Every other service I have (currently hulu, disney+, HBO max, Peacock b/c daughter got it for $1.99 a month for a year on a student plan, plus a half dozen free ones) is smart enough to start me back up where I left off on a episode of a show. Every time. Without fail. Apple? Nope, they can't do it, at least not on your original install. I googled it and saw tons of others have had the same issue, sometimes it got fixed, sometimes it didn't, it appears to be random. I was able to log out then log back in and it appears to be working for now, but my wife still can't get it to work on the TV downstairs. I mean...you guys are the most valuable company in the world and you can't figure out how to restart every episode where it was left off by default? Embarrassing.

It's the general topic of the day, but Apple could benefit from purchasing a production division.

Clearly they'll be fine. However, it's odd that they would go into anything in such a halfway manner. Subletting out the production to others? How many people actually know that Apple doesn't produce the sports on their network? Everyone else does, or most do at least, so it's reasonable for an average fan to assume that Apple does the same. They're just dipping a toe in the streaming market now, kinda makes me wonder if that's because they're planning a big purchase soon "cough ESPN cough".

If apple is going into production its actually good news for the pac, as that would save them a few million per year to perform their own in-conference production.

RE: Fortune: Apple TV is accused of botching Lionel Messi’s unveiling
This is probably going to prove irrelevant. I am increasingly of the opinion Apple will not be signing a deal with the Pac-12. The Pac-12 is just too unstable and too rinky dink a product anyway for them to bother. I suspect they threw a price out for them for everything, have no reason to negotiate anything on it. If the Pac-12 hasn't taken it as offered, then it won't happen. If anything, the recent news and publicity of the Pac-12 is so bad I suspect the offer has quietly been pulled and if still exists is at a much lower price point taking into account the risk factors.

Apple doesn't know what it's doing with live events. They would have to acquire another company to be competent (I suspect they probably will at some point, and it likely won't be a block buster brand, but one that is known for competence; think Raycom type company).

I could be wrong, but I just don't think the Pac-12 makes any sense for ESPN to gamble on.
