P5 vs G5
Who would you rank as the top 5 P5 and the top ranked G5? Any P5 you believe is lower quality than a G5? I have to say the Sunbelt is the top G5, if you want to AAC is that's fine but I really feel like that's only due to media rights. Soon enough the AAC will implode and I truly feel like the Sunbelt will be the top conference in the G5. In terms of solidification over the years, the MAC wins it all. I still throw up in my mouth thinking about Sam Houston and Jacksonville State being in the FCS, as well as the talks of ACU and Tarlteton State becoming FBS.

RE: P5 vs G5
My opinion.

Top P5 Conferences
1. SEC
2. Big 10
3. Big 12
4. PAC
5. ACC

Top G5 Conferences
1. AAC
2. SBC
3. MWC
4. CUSA
5. MAC

Top 5 P5 Teams
1. Georgia
2. Alabama
3. Michigan
4. Ohio State
5. USC

Top 5 G5 Teams
1. Troy
2. Tulane
3. Boise State
4. UTSA
5. WKU

I think Boise State ends up with the Access Bowl slot. I think only Fresno gives them trouble in the MWC. I think Troy will be the best team in the SBC, and that the SBC will be a tougher league than the MWC. But I think that leaves them with 2 losses to Boise's 1. The AAC's top will be solid this year, but their bottom will drag them down. CUSA will finish just ahead of the MAC with WKU and Liberty having good years. I think the MAC will do what they almost always do and beat each other up enough to not have a real standout.

I'm leaning toward South Alabama. They're may not be be another G5 ready to explode more than them.

They get practically everyone back... QB, RB's, WR's, DL's, coaching staff.... anything less than a 10-win season again will be a disappointment for them.

I am probably biased against them because they laid a bit of an egg in the bowl game against us. And on the flip side Troy controlled the game against us outside of some 4th quarter wackiness that made the final score close.

Well a CB went to the 49ers and one WR was an UFA picked up by the Buffalo Bills, but we do have a ton of players returning. And our schedule is tougher this year. And it’s different in being the hunted instead of the hunter. We’ll see how South Alabama responds this year.

I have some thoughts about both games. I don't think South Alabama was really prepared for your up tempo game the way you ran it, which from the words of some of your fans, was different from how you played during the season. If the game was played again, it might have been much closer. Not saying USA would have had a W though.

In the Troy game, you guys cut through our defense like a knife through hot butter, and then changed your game plan. I'm always curious about the reasons for this because I've seen lots of teams do this very thing. Sometimes the first drive is scripted, sometimes the coach is just scared to keep trying it. Not sure what the deal was, but I always felt that had you kept doing that, it could have been a much different game. Glad you didn't though! Curious as to what the game plan will be this year in Troy.

As much as I would love to see South as number 1 in the Sun Belt, I have to say Troy is until they get knocked off.

RE: P5 vs G5
I take Phil Steele's national unit rankings with a grain of salt, but I do think they're interesting. Here's the number of unit rankings each each of these G5 teams has for the 7 rankings (QB, RB, OL, WR, DL, LB, DB).

South Alabama: 6 (all but WR)
UTSA: 5 (no RB, OL)
Boise: 5 (no WR, LB)
SMU: 5 (no DL, LB)
Tulane: 4 (no WR, LB, or DB)

Those are his top 5 G5 teams BTW. South ranks #2 among all G5s in Steele's national rankings, 1 place behind UTSA.

As much as this thread is feeding my ego:

1. Tulane
2. Troy
3. USA
4. Boise
5. SMU

Sun Belt West is so top heavy. Off topic but are Troy fans happy about having a month without any home games and the first one back is 5 days rest against USA? That stuck out to me.

I think UTSA is better than SMU but we have a much harder schedule than they do. SMU will be at worst 6-2 which will probably be enough make the CCG.

Seems fine to me. There is a bye week in there and it's only two away games. USA also has 5 days rest, though their situation is the opposite, coming from home and going on the road. Maybe they have a little more rest since there won't be a plane involved in the last seven days, but that's getting nit picky.

UTSA should be the front runner for the AAC this year. Great team and great coach. The question for Tulane is going to be whether they con sustain success. Same for Troy, though I'd give Troy the nod there, since they've been there before, and Tulane has never had that kind of success.
