Northwestern doesn't mind boxing out Ohio St/Michigan/Nebraska/Wisconsin/Iowa/Michigan St fans as 35k should allow those games to carry a majority of purple, whereas 47k adds an extra 12k of scarlet/maize/red/gold/green.
One only needs to Google something like “Ohio State fans at Ryan Field” to see how lousy it looks. NU swapped the official visitor section and student section a few years ago so the former isn’t shown all game on TV and the latter gets more attention, but at a certain point any team with a significant fan base will outnumber fans in purple in the GA section.
One thing to note also is the stadium design: the current plans call for a stadium with four steep levels, they’re all way smaller than the single Ryan Field grandstand now but I’d argue that the height makes it look just as large as the current facility.

As a "P2 program", that's just sad lol
Of note, the vast majority of STH'ers are on the double-decked West Side, which is the non-tv side. The West Side, particularly the concourse, is way better than the East Side, so most people buy ST's there. That's something they will need to fix with the new stadium - try to make the tv side the desirable side for STH'ers.
I've been to a few OSU@NU games (the one with Gameday about 10 years back, the one on a Friday night a few years ago, and the one with hurricane-esque weather last year) and they're about 25k OSU/22k NU.

RE: Northwestern Stadium
Northwestern's average attendance from 2022 back to 2010 (skipping 2020).
28,697 30,679 37,736 43,873 35,853 34,798 33,366 38,613 39,307 35,697 33,442 36,449
Looking back all the way to 1996, they broke 40k from 1996-1998, but didn't even hit 35k again until the 36,449 in 2010. 2018 with the 43,873 is the best going back to 1996.

If I had to guess, the tentative seating chart would put most of the STH and some student seats across from the TV cameras with visitor reserved seats concentrated in the corner on the camera side of the stadium, with as many GA seats as possible in the upper deck. The split might be closer to something like 20K NU/15K OSU which isn’t great, but will be a huge step up with how fans are placed.
