SDSU doesn't have a home. What a monumental screw up.

I'll say it again, Snake oil salesman Kliavkoff is to blame for this, well at least half. I live in Washington and I hear the news on local radio and it all sounds like Canzano reports. Kliavkoff has all of these reporters eating out of his hand and believing his crap. It's unbelievable. SDSU is just Georgie boys latest casualty. Sorry Aztecs you put your faith in the wrong man.

I wonder if SDSU could pull a BYU and go independent for football and WCC for everything else. This is definitely entertaining and hilarious.

I think George assured them that they were going to be invited before the end of last month. Otherwise they do not send the first letter.

My guess is things went sour when it became clear that no deal would be reached by the end of June.

Worst still , they became pac12’s patsy. Nicely done George.

Yep.

So MWC loses out on any exit fee, and will also have to pay SDSU it's $6M.

And then, when redoing their TV deal, the MWC will realize what happens when the largest market by far is no longer in your conference.

SDSU said they intended to withdraw. They never said when and they asked for an extension. This looks like an extension to me! Mission accomplished! They wont have to pay 34m.

Nah, if you can't get into the PAC or Big 12 and you want to screw the MWC, join the AAC at least as a football only member. Maybe that gets Boise St. (at least football only), Air Force, and Colorado St. to join. the AAC. Maybe add Army football and 1 other MWC football only (thinking Fresno St.). MWC would survive, but it would probably be like C-USA needing FCS schools to survive.

The MWC can rattle its saber all it wants, but a letter of intent is not a binding contract. San Diego State sent that letter to the conference as a courtesy and to begin a period of negotiation.

The MWC will not come out ahead here, and has now ruined its relationship with its flagship program. 05-nono

There was no rational way to read that letter other than as a withdrawal.
SDSU is out and owes.

Wow! That’s insane!

The AAC should foot the bill for the exit fee to bring in SDSU.

Yep. And if they win a bunch of NCAAT games again over the next couple years, they get to keep all that money, too.

I don't blame the MWC for taking that hard line stance, but things might change a LOT in the next few months. What happens if the Pac implodes and invites 2/3 of the MWC? Nevarez needs to be tough here, Pac issues could quickly snowball into existential MWC issues.

What did they do to Boise St? Or do you mean Fresno St?

And yes, this is clearly just posturing and sabre-rattling.

They’d have to get an at large in basketball to go to the tournament. That might not be difficult for them, but they’d have a harder time putting together a schedule. And that’s just hoops. Without a conference no other sport is going dancing without an at large bid either and scheduling is a nightmare.

SDSU is out and owes.

Legally, there is no rational way to read that letter as a legally binding withdrawal. It was a letter of intent, which is generally considered a starting point of negotiation.

When there are questions about whether a LOI could be legally binding, you look to whether all parties agree that it was binding, which SDSU made ever more crystal clear after the MWC tried to accept the LOI as a resignation letter.

I don't know what the MWC's goal is with this posturing, but in their best-case scenario they will have to renegotiate their media deals with questions hovering about whether their most valuable program is indeed a member of the league. 01-wingedeagle

Read a bit like anticipatory repudiation. Someone may have gotten meh legal advice on how to draft that gem.

MWC says their out, MWC pays 6.6M
Join Pac at no cost
SDST can sell their TV rights to ESPN for the 10:30 window for 6M

Atten will improve with Pac schools coming in, which is more money
now if SDST does't have to pay exit fee & gets 7 yrs of BB credits money back
things will be looking good

MWC played hardball when BYU left and cost MWC money

Not likely. Two years ago their AD said they couldn't put all of their teams in the AAC, nor was there a viable alternative for the rest of their sports. Not much has changed with respect to that.

I believe the letter stated “intend to resign by July 1st”, contrary to what someone posted here, but I’ll have to read it again.

Regardless, I would just go independent and then have the PAC absorb/cherry pick the MWC through OreSt Wazzou and SDSU, which is a solid enough base to do so.

RE: Mountain West: SDSU left the conference and owes $17 million
I expect that on July 17th the MWC board will vote to accept SDSU back into the conference and to not levy an exit fee or re-entrance fee (allowing the $6.6 million distribution to proceed). In exchange SDSU will have to sign a legal document acknowledging its agreement with the MWC’s interpretation of events, promising not to pursue any legal action connected with those events, and reaffirming its commitment to abide by conference by-laws going forward.

However in the meantime I don’t think Nevarez is the least bit concerned about making SDSU sweat.  As others have suggested, a message is being sent and it’s not only directed at SDSU.
