Welcome Marcus Smart!
Sad to see Tyus and our #25 pick go, but definitely upgraded as long as he stays healthy. 9 years of playoff experience, plays defense, can lead a locker room. Not bad at all.

It was two #1s. (Next seasons GSW pick) but makes a lot of sense.
Smart replaces Dillon Brooks, brings veteran leadership, plays point while Ja is out.. We are already overstocked on projects so the late firsts are a chance to give our young talent more time to develop,
Now we use the MLE to sign another veteran wing.
I sense one more deal may be in the works sending out some young talent/pick to bring in another legit rotation big man.
Welcome to Memphis Marcus!

I like the move because it brings a veteran presence the Grizzlies desperately needs. Hopefully we make more moves to bring in veterans. Sad to see Tyus go. Will be cheering for him wherever goes in the future. I suspect he will be getting a big payday being the primary point guard.

Grizz will probably go PG in the draft. Kendrick Davis will probably be there at 45. Will KD be a Grizz?

Grizzlies give up:
25 pick in this years draft
the pick from taking Iguadala from GSW
A Great Backup point guard
Grizzlies get:
a proven veteran who was defensive player of the year and has made multiple NBA All Defensive Team!
Great Trade for Grizzlies
ALSO -- Smart has 3 years remaining on a $19million per year contract--- very managable

Hate to see Tyus go, but we knew we were going to have to give up some players/picks to improve the team. I believe Marcus fills a need. We still have options to bring in a wing player via free agency.

Now I hope we either pick up Keyontae Johnson or Kobe Brown with the 45th pick.

Tyus did us a huge solid on the way out. Smart is going to be a massive fan favorite, like injecting Dillon with more maturity and better basketball IQ.
Hope Tyus doesn't get stuck in that Washington dumpster for too long. Would have liked to see him end up in a better spot but I'm glad they pulled the trigger.

I loved what KD brought to the Tigers and we were lucky to have him, but I dont want him as a Grizz. He is often much too inefficient but boosted his numbers with free throws. While I do believe he will continue to pick up fouls in the NBA (that is part of his game) I dont think it will be near the same rate as he did in college. He wont be given the benefit of the doubt by NBA refs since he will not be a big time name and from a smaller market.

Using the MLE I would take a swing at Bruce Brown .... that's the only option out there that I see us having a realistic chance at .... Trading the 2 #1's for Smart takes us totally out of the running for O.G. in my opinnion .... Zaire / LaRavia; only 1 at the most are with the Grizz post training camp time ....

If that is really a choice and the money is even close then Zaire will be here. Williams has at least shown spurts of lookin glike a real NBA player.. LaRavia looks lost every time he is on the court

Initially I was pretty pumped about this. I think now I’m more cautiously optimistic. No one can argue that Smart plays really hard and he brings tough defense that was lost with Dillon being let go. Hopefully, you’re right and he brings the veteran leadership this team so desperately needs.
Looking at his stats, he’s a volume shooter and his percentages are lower than both Dillon and Tyus. He does have the edge on assists and is definitely a better defender than TJ. He’s probably a better defender than Dillon too, but honestly I haven’t studied him enough to know. Dillon is a few inches taller.
Anyhoo, given the position we were in, it was a very good pickup. I guess originally I thought he was a better shooter, but at least he’s a good passer. I agree that we still need a solid wing player. I will feel better if we can fill that void.

Smart’s wingspan is 6’9 compared to Brooks 6’6. Dude has freakishly long arms and is very athletic. Smart also knows his role - he took less than 10 shots a game last season which was the fourth most on the team. The two all stars took more than double his shots. Brooks on the other hand took close to 14 shots a game; Ja averaged 5 more shots than Brooks while Bane averaged 2 more. JJJ took less than Brooks.
