Another "victory" with this new model...

I don't inspect other conference schedules like I do the Big Ten, but we had consistently made it "home and away" deal with other teams. So, recently, we'd play the 6 from the East and then 3 from the west for 2 years (home and away) and then 3 others from the west (home and away). So we wouldn't even play each team in a 14 team conference every 4 years. One team we'd only get twice every 6 years.

With the NFL model now being adopted, we'll have more variety on the schedule. 15 teams in 2 years. Plus, 5 (assuming we have one OOC home-and-away) different OOC teams every two years.

That's 20 different teams in a 24 game schedule over 2 years. (The old model was more like 14 different teams in a 2 year span.

I like that variety.

How do you feel about not having a rival every year?

No Ohio St. And, of course, no Maryland or Rutgers or Michigan St.

You know it! 04-rock

I love the schedule. Having Indiana, Maryland, and Rutgers on the schedule every year has been such a drag. I mean, I like having tradition...but I think the new model means we'll have regular "two-plays" with Rutgers, Maryland, OSU, and Michigan State. (My speculation...)

So we'll play them 3 out of 4 years...which is plenty. And then the rest of the Big Ten--who we have very little long-standing affinity with--we'll see twice every four years. I love it.

And if they make UCLA our other two-play in 2026/2027, I'll be even happier. Rotating home-away with USC and UCLA every four years...would be incredible.

I'm thrilled we're hosting USC in 2024 and traveling to the Coliseum in 2025.

Aside from the Ohio St-Penn St game not getting protected, I’m ok with this set up.

When it comes down to it, some rivalry games have mutual interest from both schools, other times you’ve got asymmetrical interest. Maryland and Rutgers both want to play Penn St—Penn St doesn’t really think of them as an equal. Penn St is ok with Mich St as kind of a rival of convenience but who they really want is Ohio St and Michigan, however those 2 probably don’t want to be saddled with another behemoth on another permanent basis. Letting Penn St have USC these first two years was a nice gesture though.

I’m also of the opinion that that these 2 seasons that have been released are actually the first two of a 4 or 6 year cycle and Ohio St-Penn St will be more like a 3-out-of-4 yr event.

Still scratching my head as to why we got Northwestern and Illinois this time around. The illibuck isn’t exactly a big deal. I guess they wanted a big program to be in Chicago.

Honestly the travel is not even that bad for USCLA. They will only have to fly to the MW / NE 4 times a year. 5 of the B1G games for USCLA each season will be in LA. I suppose you can add a additional trip if either school makes the B1G Title Game. Any chance it's ever played in California?

Doubt it personally for football (some other events, sure). Rose Bowl is already there which is a big post season event. I dont think they would put the championship there and risk two Midwestern teams being in it (especially since Big Ten champ will likely play in Rose Bowl often after that).

It’s unprecedented for a California program to fly to the Midwest or east coast four times a season. We’ll see if it’s not bad.

West Coast pro teams make at least 3 trips to the Eastern Time Zone and 3 to the central each season.

I know, I know...they are pro teams and not college...but A) an extra hour or two on a plane is NOT the lion share of the travel time--it's the bus to the airport, security, baggage, etc.--and you have to do that whether you're flying to San Fran or Phoenix or Chicago or Detroit...and B) with NIL and free transfers, the college "idealism" of yesteryear is fading fast. These young men treat it like a career and it's treating them like it's a career too.
