Pittsburg State hurdler runs 4th fastest time in history
He had walked away from track 3 years earlier and did not plan to compete again.

Cordell Tinch originally went to Minnesota to play football, with thoughts of possibly doing track also. Coaches moved on and he ended up at Kansas and competed well in Big 12 track for a couple of seasons. After a transfer issue prevented him from competing at nationals, he gave up track for a while. Long story short, we was working at a cell phone store in Wisconsin before ending up in Pittsburg Kansas and becoming (literally) a world wide story. People don’t just pop out of nowhere and run close to a world record time at D2 nationals.

Funny note, I only ran across his story when I was looking for information about the screwup in the 5K I also posted about. Instead, I found a much more interesting story in Cordell Tinch.

This article is a good story, written in May, before nationals.
Note, when they use the phrase “under any conditions” that means his time was on a day with enough wind to make it the time not quite “official” for records purposes.

He ran a 12.87

Second was 13.42. The 13.42 would have been a DII Championship record.

Tinch was also competing in the High Jump at the time. He ran over to run the hurdles, and then went back to the High Jump competition.

Tinch was also competing in the High Jump at the time. He ran over to run the hurdles, and then went back to the High Jump competition.
He had cleared 2.09 m in the High Jump and then went to the track to run the Hurdles. They had the podium ceremony for the Hurdles. By the time he returned to the High Jump the bar was at 2.18 m. He missed once at that height and passed so they raised it 2.21 m, which he cleared to take First in that event as well.

He also won the Long Jump, but that was the day before.

He grew up in Green Bay (Wisconsin) and had gone to Minnesota to play football (and track) in 2018-19. I don't think he actually played football at Minnesota, and his assistant track coach at Minnesota had moved to Kansas. Tinch transferred to Kansas in January 2019. He competed in track including the NCAA regionals before being kept out of the nationals because of problems with the transfer. He ran track at Kansas in 2019-2020 but the outdoor season would have been wiped out because of COVID, and he moved back to Green Bay.

He transferred from Coffeeville Community College to Pittsburg State at the semester break, so there were probably some academic issues as well.

Here is some additional information on the 110 hurdles world record. It is 12.80, and Tinch was just 7 hundredths off, and faster than has ever been run in either the Olympics or World Championships.

Awesome story (and T&F is a great sport)

Let's hope the lap counter for the 5K wasn't the automatic time operator for the hurdles

His time blew all the times at D1 nationals off the track. D1 winner was 13.24 vs his 12.87. .37 is a huge, huge difference in this race.

https://flashresults.ncaa.com/Outdoor/20...mpiled.htm

There was .26 difference between the 1st and last finisher in the finals.
