underwhelming...35,000 seat stadium, and they're like last in their city to get coverage, behind the Chargers&Padres.
They'd be page 10 news in a 11 page newspaper.
But it's the 28th largest DMA in the nation. It adds over 1M TVs to future contract negotiations.

ok so it is a nice market.
That market does not care about Aztec football. So it really doesn't add anything of value.
Their stadium has been open for a year, and still hasn't had a sellout yet...they did come close in their first game tho. 34,046
It's one thing to be in a market and yet another to own or penetrate that market.
But to be fair even without USCLA, SDSU will be seeing a major schedule upgrade which should substantially increase attendance.

No doubts at all about attendance increase. I just wonder if the addition of SDSU will move the needle in that market. The PAC still owns the sexiest California college brands not named USC or UCLA. It's not like we are talking about moving into foreign territory. I don't know. Just my 2 cents. This conference change nonsense, the NIL crap, and the ever-increasing injection of politics into an entertainment product is helping me discover other forms of entertainment.

sdsu joining pac will help them like memphis joining the sec. Interest in sdsu games would explode.
it might, but the upcoming PAC without UCLA or USC is greatly diminished. They still have Utah, Oregon, Washington, and Oregon State (for now)...Cal is down, Stanford is down, Arizona and Arizona State are down, Colorado is down, etc.
No one in that group with the exception of maybe Oregon could make a run at a playoff slot.

These tv markets are ridiculous. I consider Orlando to be far from everything, especially since there is no ocean.

That's what puzzles me about DMAs... who created them and based on what criteria? How long ago?
Just looking at Jackson TN TV stations ( link), they get stations from:
- Jackson - WBBJ (ABC, CBS), WJKT (FOX), WNBJ (NBC, CW), WANF/WMC (NBC)
- Lexington - WLJT (PBS)
- Holly Springs - WBUY (TBN)
- Memphis - WATN (ABC), WMC (NBC), WREG (CBS), WKNO (PBS), WLMT (CW), WPXX (ION), WHBQ (FOX)
Jackson gets more stations from Memphis than from the other 3 locations combined.
And technically, Holly Springs is in the Memphis metro.
And here's Jonesboro, AR stations...
- Jonesboro - KTEJ (PBS), KAIT (ABC, NBC, CW), KJNB (FOX, CBS),
Poplar Bluff - KPOB (ABC, ION)
Memphis - WATN (ABC), WMC (NBC), WREG (CBS), WKNO (PBS), WLMT (CW), WPXX (ION), WHBQ (FOX), WDNM (Daystar)
Holly Springs - WBUY (TBN)
Again, more stations from Memphis.
So why are Jonesboro and Jackson separate DMAs?
183. Jonesboro DMA - 6 counties - 86,410
171. Jackson DMA - 6 counties - 103,540
52. Memphis DMA - 28 counties - 644,360
41. Combined DMA -834,310
Being in the Top 50 is better than being outside the Top 50
40. Las Vegas - 870,240
41. Memphis - 834,310
42. Jacksonville - 790,580
Current DMA Rankings
40 Las Vegas
41 Jacksonville
42 Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo-Battle Creek
43 Harrisburg-Lancaster-Lebanon-York
44 Norfolk-Portsmouth-Newport News
45 Birmingham-Anniston-Tuscaloosa
46 Oklahoma City
47 Greensboro-High Point-Winston Salem
48 Louisville
49 Albuquerque-Santa Fe
50 New Orleans

RE: Big 12 eyes Memphis, substantive talks with Colorado per reports
Here is a short description from Nielsen about how DMA are determined.
https://www.nielsen.com/dma-regions/
Quote:DMA (Designated Market Area) regions are the geographic areas in the U.S. in which local television viewing is measured by Nielsen. DMA data is essential for any marketer, researcher or organization seeking to use standardized geographic areas within their business.
A DMA region is a group of counties and zip codes that form an exclusive geographic area in which the home market television stations hold a dominance of total hours viewed. There are 210 DMA regions, covering the entire continental U.S., Hawaii, and parts of Alaska. DMA boundaries and data are solely owned and exclusive to Nielsen. Any use and or reproduction of these materials without the express written consent of Nielsen is strictly prohibited.

I wonder how Disney World factors into Orlando, with so many people coming in from all over. The parks average around 160k people per day. Of course they arent watching tv at the park, but at the end of the day when they go back to where they are staying I am sure there is some tv watching.

dude, its a 35,000 seat stadium.
They'd have to add 10-15,000 seats for it to be substantial.

That's a testament to what a great place to live San Diego is. The weather is perfect. The beaches are great. San Diegans are living life to the fullest everyday and not as concerned with sports or watching TV.
I refer to it as the "Friday Night Lights" syndrome. Those in small/poor towns often wear it as a badge of honor how much the community cares about a local team. But it's often because their real lives are such a struggle, they need something to be proud of.

I think the potential is there. If looking for markets that can grow the PAC
brand, San Diego makes a lot of sense. Especially after losing their presence in LA.
