Sorry, but this whole ranking is kinda silly. Everything changes. Everything. 40 years is too long. Everything has changed since 1983.

Boise at #25 could only be there because they've been FBS only since 1997. If you used a record of 0-10 per year in FBS for the first 14 years, then you might have them positioned well, because a good FCS team would probably have had that record against FBS teams.

Nebraska isn't on this list yet. So they must be Top 10. Really? LOL.

What if this list were produced in 1975? Florida State would be nowhere to be found. But apparently they're top 10 now as well, since they aren't listed yet either.

This kind of list is produced only to generate controversy, or puff up the egos of those who are in the Top 10, probably produced by a fan of one of those teams. A list like this going back only 10-15 years might be meaningful.

I disagree. It rewards the programs whom performed well.

Your point on Boise State is also off. Marshall also came back around to FBS around the same time as Boise State. The write up for Marshall also took into consideration the dominant run in 1-AA (FCS) before the call up.

40 years is a good relevant snapshot IMHO.

The problem with the last 40 years is that schools that were independent before 1982 moved back up in the 90s or later like North Texas, Arkansas State, Utah State, App State, but then we lost some like Long Beach State, West Texas State, Idaho, Fullerton State, Santa Clara, Pacific and so on. That is not really a true history, and it did also hurt college sports then.

Anyone who doesn’t like the 40 year timespan is free to compute their own list over whatever period of time they want.

Even though there is one more day left he has released his #2 so we know his #1. Here are the top ten schools in his ranking.

1. Alabama
2. Ohio State
3. Florida State
4. Oklahoma
5. Florida
6. Miami
7. Georgia
8. Michigan
9. Nebraska
10. Clemson

His top 24 looks like a pretty accurate breakaway league. West Virginia and to a lesser extent Iowa would probably get screwed over though. It feels safe to say that UCLA, who is also #26 on the list, would get in over WV.

Using his rankings, here's my guess of what a 24-team league would look like.

Four divisions

West

Oklahoma
Oregon
Texas
UCLA
USC
Washington

North

Iowa
Michigan
Nebraska
Notre Dame
Ohio State
Wisconsin

South

Alabama
Auburn
Georgia
LSU
Tennessee
Texas A&M

East

Clemson
Florida
Florida State
Miami
Penn State
Virginia Tech

Six divisions

West

Oregon
UCLA
USC
Washington

Southwest

Oklahoma
Texas
Texas A&M
LSU

South

Alabama
Auburn
Tennessee
Clemson

Southeast

Florida
Florida State
Georgia
Miami

North

Nebraska
Iowa
Wisconsin
Notre Dame

Northeast

Michigan
Ohio State
Penn State
Virginia Tech

I like the look of the six divisions more. Even though this would be football only, it would be better for the sake of travel. It would better allows teams in their division to play twice per season while still being able to play six other teams in the league in a 12-game season. Playoff could be six division winners plus two wildcards for an 8-team playoff.

What I pointed out is the data is not complete when you had schools like Wichita State, West Texas State, UTA, Pacific, Fullerton State, Long Beach State, Santa Clara and Idaho are missing from that data. They were part of the 1A/FBS members in the last 40 years time span. The newcomers were added, but not the ones who did have history.

They aren't relevant to today. they don't have a current FBS program.

But we have a Heisman less than 40 years ago. How can you not include that award, at least?
